OVERLOOKING, AS IT DOES, THE BLUE, BEAUTIFUL sea, Santa Barbara and its people overlook little else. The Clubs that comprise the workforce behind this iconic weekend go all out to attain their goal: a one-of-a-kind cluster, memorable in sensibility and scope. And the beauty of the landscape is matched by the beauty of the personalities who make it all possible. Simi Valley, Santa Barbara, and Los Encinos KCs do the heavy lifting leaving the rest of us to relax and enjoy. Even exhibitors, although certainly seri- ous in their quest, wear an air of festival all four days. And all four days are packed full of events that keep one on the edge of his seat—or the tip of his toes. Viewing the judging is not difficult for the rings are arranged in a meticulous manner. The indoor enclosures provide ample gateside seating and little crowding, and the sunlit cheery outside areas are park-like and pretty. More here than most places you’ll see ring-hopping and smile-sharing as fanciers mill about watching judges they admire, dogs they love, handlers, breeders, owners (and owner/handlers and breeders who are owner/han- dlers and, well, you get it) whose expertise they respect, and greeting friends every direction they gaze. Santa Barbara weekend didn’t don its cachet without reason; it is, indeed, a very special affair.>
