Santa Barbara ’17 by Joseph Neil McGinnis III Photos: Sharon Carvalho because they’re certainly deserved—but then in a flash I remembered his directions and so I bit my tongue mid-thought. I stammered out “We’re pleased to welcome the Uber-uh-uh-uh <crickets chirping>... Accomplished David Santa Barbara ’17 by Joseph Neil McGinnis III Photos: Sharon Carvalho Haddock” and I quickly waved him into the ring to join the lovely Ev. Having this modest, handsome man on any panel has to add great benefit to an event. Having Evalyn judge or in attendance anywhere is a top-tier pleasure. Well, as intros go, it wasn’t bad, but I do way better. Most of the time. The time in Santa Barbara flew by fast but there was still plenty of time to relax, enjoy and learn. As the Widow Lady says in The King and I , “By our students we are taught.” Each time I mentor prospective judges in my original breed, Pekes, I pick up knowledge to add to my forty-four years’ experience. This was the case, here, and I was honored to be asked and happy to oblige. Thank you LEKC Chair Steven Hamblin for the welcomed responsiblity. Those who say the up-and-coming judges aren’t as dedicated as those of the past cannot prove it by me; I’ve never failed to be impressed by the people with whom I’ve gott- ten to work. In this instance, I wish great luck to Connie Clark and Christine Erickson as they pursue approval to add this awesome breed to their present lists. I want to extend special thanks to SBKC President Abbe Shaw for once again giving us a shining example of everything a dog fancier should be, and to the Clubs and everyone involved for this annual yet once-in-a-lifetime event. As always, gratitude to Jeanne Austin for all she does for everyone. Certainly when I recently referred to SBKC Show Chair as “The Incomparable Anita O’Berg ” I wasn’t kidding, and of course I have to mention the Uber- Talented Terry Chacon , whose artwork graced the cover of the catalog again this year and whose contributions cannot be overstated. I stand by my statement that this weekend’s a true gift. Those of us who’ve put on big events understand the work they require. All shows are tough tasks; these even moreso. My hat is on—not off—to all involved. I stand by my statement that this weekend’s a true gift. Those of us who’ve put on big events understand the work they requi .
