OF DAN KIEDROWSKI MY FOND MEMORIES by JOAN HUBER

D an was one of my best friends; a confidant and mentor. Over 50 years ago, we both were teaching school, Dan, in Michigan, and me, in Maryland. From the beginning, we con- fided in each other. We had a mutual admiration for each other, he, with the magazine and me, with the breeding and handling. All of the Best in Shows, Specialty wins and over 850 Champi- ons were wonderful but more impor- tant was Dan’s approval. I remember after judging Sweeps at Montgomery, he said, “You did good girl!” Another time at Montgomery, he leaned over the ring barrier to say, “No one free handles and communicates with an animal like you.” These comments, from him, will always be remembered. He never, ever, just commented unless he felt praise was deserved. Whenever I had a chance, I visited him at his home in La Honda. We talked about dogs, not just Miniature Schnau- zers and Terriers, but all breeds. He had a fantastic knowledge of so many breeds and could explain breed-type and the true essence of each breed. There were so many times when either of us would spot an exceptional animal in any breed and we would ask each other’s opinion. He was always spot-on! I learned so much from him. He would spend hours generously conveying his knowledge with anyone who truly wished to learn. On a personal note, (not discuss- ing dogs) he would share his ideas and offer wise solutions to problems in many areas of life. We shared fun times too! In the early days, when I’d be in California, we would get in his old car and drive to Reno for a few days. His attire was always flip flops and jeans. He taught me how to shoot craps at the casino. We’d get there late and stay up all night and then crash.
