Alaskan Klee Kai CLUB OF AMERICA

LETTER FROM LINDA S. SPURLIN, DEVELOPER OF THE ALASKAN KLEE KAI

D eveloping this new breed was a goal and dream of mine since the mid-1970s. With strict and selective breeding for over 45 years now, and with the help of family, friends, and many new acquaintances along the way, I was able to achieve this goal: to develop a beautiful com- panion-sized version of the Alaskan Husky which is adaptable to multiple lifestyles and climates, easy to travel with, structured for hiking and sporting activities, intelligent and anxious to learn new tasks, and most importantly, a healthy, loyal, and loving compan- ion dog for all ages. Their small size, Husky look, and distinctive, contrasting, symmetrical facial mask and markings attract atten- tion wherever they go.

It has been an amazing journey, and so incredible to see these little dogs doing so much for so many people, not only in Alaska where the breed was developed but throughout the Continental United States—and now throughout the world! I see the close bonds the Alaskan Klee Kai have with their families and owners, the joy and entertainment they bring with their silly and mis- chievous nature, and their capabilities in so many areas that have exceeded even my hopes for the breed. In addition to being loving family members, the Alaskan Klee Kai are active in so many areas which showcase their skills, beauty, and temperament. They are currently active in conformation, agil- ity, scent work, drag and lure racing, obedience and rally, trick dog, weight pull, carting, dock diving, therapy work, service work, diabetic and gluten detection, and emotional support. They love to hike, climb, and run through fields, hills, forests, and moun- tains. They love to swim and can be found playing in the pool, on the beaches, and even on boats, kayaks, and paddle boards! With their smaller size, and Husky-like dedication to work and to their humans, they are very versatile, from the big outdoors to the loving laps in a smaller apartment. I would love to continue this adventure through the Ameri- can Kennel Club, to help share our breed and educate even more people of the wonders of the Alaskan Klee Kai. Linda S.
