ALASKAN KLEE KAI CLUB OF AMERICA

DOG SHOW EVENTS The Alaskan Klee Kai is currently in the AKC FSS and work- ing to advance to the Miscellaneous Class and then, ultimately, obtaining full AKC breed recognition in the Non-Sporting Group. AKC FSS-registered Alaskan Klee Kai compete in AKC FSS Open Conformation events, the Companion Events of Agility, Rally, Obedience, and Tracking, and other Performance events. Navigating the obstacle course in Agility helps to promote and highlight the teamwork between AKK and their owners as well as adding mental and physical exercise for both. Training and socializing your AKK is important to start at an early age. Rally and Obedience show off much of their trainabil- ity and intelligence, and also strengthens the communication and bond between dog and owner. Whether at home or in public, a well-behaved dog is wonderful to have. Tracking is a noncompetitive sport that utilizes the dog’s natural ability to recognize and follow a scent. It is also the base of search and rescue work. If you enjoy spending time outdoors while training and interacting with your dog, try tracking with your AKK. Alaskan Klee Kai are also seen enjoying Performance events such as Coursing (Lure, CAT, and FastCAT) which help to feed the breed’s “need for speed.” These are great events for newcomers to get involved in. AKK owners will understand the natural prey drive and speed after witnessing their dogs’ zoomies!

AKKCOA AND AKC In 1988, Linda Spurlin originally contacted the American Ken- nel Club for the requirements needed to recognize the new Klee Kai breed. AKC required a larger number of dogs, breeders, and multiple different owners in locations all across the United States. They also required decades (at least 30-40 years at that time) with multiple purebred generations of the distinct breed before consid- eration to begin the AKC recognition process. In August of 2002, Linda started the Alaskan Klee Kai Club of America (AKKCOA), with the same goal of achieving AKC recog- nition. Throughout the years since that time, the breed continued to grow in numbers, generations, breeders, owners, and history, while enjoying and sharing the wonderful versatility of the breed. Several people have been involved over the years to help the breed and the club work to bring this to reality. The Alaskan Klee Kai Club of America (AKKCOA) is a vol- unteer, nonprofit organization to help guide and educate owners, breeders, exhibitors, enthusiasts, judges, and the general public about the breed, its history, and its future. The purpose of AKKCOA is to encourage, promote, protect, and preserve the highest standards in improving the purebred Alaskan Klee Kai to the breed developer’s original vision of the best of the best for appearance, soundness, structure, temperament, and health. The Alaskan Klee Kai (AKK) was accepted into the American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Services (AKC FSS) in October of 2020. AKKCOA was approved as the AKC National Parent Club for the Alaskan Klee Kai in April of 2022. “The purpose of AKKCOA is to encourage, promote, protect, and preserve the highest standards in improving the purebred Alaskan Klee Kai to the breed developer’s original vision of the best of the best for appearance, soundness, structure, temperament, and health.”
