A Reading From the Book of Face What’s Love Got to Do With It? BY DAN SAYERS

I n this season of love, everyone is encour- aged to express his or her devotion (or desire) toward someone for whom they feel deep affection. Although love letters sent by post or slipped under a door may no longer be en vogue, present-day paramours contin- ue to proclaim their affection every February 14th in ways

based on love. The author posits, “Is it possible that the capac- ity dogs and humans each have for love is one dependent on the long-term relationship between the two?” His hypothesis is given ample support through stories of his relationship with Benjy, his family’s beloved Labrador Retriever. Intended for a life of service as a guide dog, Benjy was an 80-pound bundle of joy that never met a person (or cat) he didn’t like. Masson writes that his affable pal would have made a won- derful guide if not for one major shortcoming. “He seemed a bit dim,” he admits. Yet, despite Benjy’s inability to meet the high standards set for a guide dog, his human companion had no trouble receiving the gift of love he had to give. “I just got lucky,” Masson suggests. Although luck may have something to do with how peo- ple and dogs are brought together, the idea that matches are made out of love is pretty extraordinary. Except that it’s not, really. Anyone who has ever opened his or her home to a dog understands that a part of the heart is opened as well. Perhaps this is why social media streams are filled with dec- larations that proclaim undying love for animals that can- not speak, but will nevertheless listen to tales of misery and woe—day after day—in excrutiating detail. If that’s not love, what exactly is it? Of course, not everyone feels love for every dog in the same way. The feelings that are awakened in us by newborn puppies are different from those elicited when a litter is eight- weeks-old. Connections made in the whelping box can often be instant and they can last a lifetime. The attachments made early on can even be so strong as to allow love to flourish through life’s most difficult periods. Adolescence in both humans and dogs can strain the best of relationships and the emotions felt during this period of exploration and self dis- covery can feel like anything but love. However, it is love that allows the relationship to endure. By the time a dog is fully mature, love has been transformed into something akin to pride—usually with some prejudice. Just one look into a dog’s eyes and it’s easy to understand how it feels for its person, and vice versa. This feeling of love is even evident when the eyes of man and beast can no longer see clearly. Revealingly, it is in the twilight of life that love reaches its perfect form. Or maybe it’s only complete when a dog has left this world to become a spirit once again. Perhaps this why so many peo- ple turn to social media to express their love for a dog that’s crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. “Having a dog is like falling in love, except that it usually does not take as long to fall in love with a dog as it does with a human,” Masson offers. “But the similarities are striking… The joy that dogs have in our presence grows as the familiar- ity grows, as does the trust and the love.” With so much love to go around, is it any wonder that so many people continue to share their lives with dogs and publicly avowal their devo- tion? When it comes to posts about dogs on social media, love has everything to do with it.

unimagined when Romeo and Juliet was first published in 1597. Proclamations of affection have now become public displays, characterized on keyboards and sent into orbit for all the world to read. Facebook has become the new Valen- tine’s Day card. In the digital age, pronouncements of love are communal, and the intended recipients need no longer be of the opposite sex. In fact, they don’t even need to be human. Nowadays, social media mavens are just as likely to compose an ode to an Old English Sheepdog as they are to wax poetic over a dearly departed spouse. Yet with so much tenderness freely transmitted, could our genuine feelings—for dogs as well as for one another—be at risk of becoming just another text message? When it comes to ardor online, “What’s love got to do with it?” In his book, The Dog Who Couldn’t Stop Loving, Jef- frey Moussaieff Masson explores the emotional connection between people and dogs that has existed the world over for thousands of years. From Masson’s point of view, there’s con- vincing evidence that the bond shared by both species is one

The love that’s exchanged between people and dogs can be instant and last a lifetime. (Photo by Dan Sayers)

Love, Actually

HOW A TINY PEPTIDE DRIVES OUR PASSION FOR DOGS

BY CHRIS ZINK DVM PHD DACVP DACVSMR CCRT CVSMT CVA

O xytocin. Most of us think of it as the hormone that helps bitches whelp and produce milk. And yes, it’s that, but oxy- tocin is so much more. A series of recent studies have revealed how oxytocin has a major effect on the brains of people and dogs to strengthen the human-canine bond—that indescribable interspe- cies attachment that might just explain why you’re reading this. Oxytocin is a peptide hormone that is secreted into the blood from the pituitary, a pea-sized structure at the base of the brain, although it also can be made in many other cells of the body. Its size—just 9 amino acids long—truly belies its important role in how people and dogs respond to the world around them. Oxytocin plays an important role in human communication. When a mother gazes at her infant, attachment begins to develop. You may be familiar with imprinting, in which an orphan baby duck becomes attached to a human and begins to follow the person around. Human attachment is a more sophisticated version of this phenomenon and is the basis of interpersonal relationships. Oxytocin plays other roles in humans as well—it’s called the “love hormone” for a reason. Oxytocin makes you feel good when you’re with someone you love by stimulating the reward center in your brain, and it also reduces stress. When you listen to calming music or sing in a choir, for example, your brain tells the pituitary to release oxytocin into the blood. This slows your heart rate and lowers your blood pressure. “Oxytocin makes you feel good when you’re with someone you love by stimulating the reward center in your brain, and it also reduces stress.”

LOVE, ACTUALLY HOW A TINY PEPTIDE DRIVES OUR PASSION FOR DOGS

Recently, scientists have been studying the role of oxytocin in the human-canine bond. It was already known that interactions between humans and dogs caused oxytocin release into the blood stream of both species. To understand more about the mechanism of this mutual hormonal response, researchers performed experi- ments to ask the following questions: Is gaze important for mutual oxytocin release between humans and dogs like it is for mothers and infants? And does mutual oxytocin release happen between humans and hand-raised wolves or just with dogs? To answer these questions, researchers measured urine oxytocin levels in dogs, or hand-raised wolves, and their people before and after spending 30 minutes alone in a room together with a video camera recording their interactions. During that time, the owners could gaze at the dogs or wolves, talk to them, and touch them. Results: Dogs differed in the amount of time that they would gaze at their owners. In fact, the dogs could be divided into long gazers and short gazers. Long gazers induced significantly higher mutual oxytocin levels in both the people and in themselves during the 30-minute interaction, whereas short gazers and hand-raised wolves did not. Conclusion: As in the relationship between mother and child, humans interacting with dogs (but not wolves) experience gaze- induced mutual oxytocin secretion, and the longer the gaze, the higher the resulting oxytocin levels in both humans and dogs (and the better both feel). This hormonal interaction is called the oxy- tocin-gaze positive loop. The figure above illustrates the steps that are involved in this positive feedback loop.

Figure Legend: The Oxytocin-Gaze Positive Loop

Why don’t you try a little experiment now? Sit down and gaze into your dog’s admiring eyes. Now think about how it makes you feel. It might seem silly, but just go ahead and do it. When you think about your feelings, do the words “calm,” “love,” “peaceful,” “happy,” and/or “content” come to mind? If they do, then you are experiencing the oxytocin-gaze positive loop! As a dog lover, I am sure that you can connect with the fol- lowing closing statements in the researchers’ publication: “These results suggest that humans may feel affection for their companion dogs similar to that felt toward human family members…” You can’t help it—it’s a chemical attraction!

PEANUT BUTTER DOG TREATS HOMEMADE DOG TREATS RECIPE

By Becky Hardin, The Cookie Rookie

H omemade Dog Treats are the best way to show your pet that you love them like family! These homemade peanut butter dog treats are an easy dog biscuit recipe that your furry friends would request every week if they could. If you’ve wondered how to make dog treats at home so they can have a healthy snack, it’s much easier than you think. Your dog deserves these homemade cookies Make these freshly-baked homemade dog treats to show your pet how special they are! They’re easy to make with just five main ingredients, and you can whip up a whole batch to store. Trust me, they’re going to absolutely love these peanut but- ter dog treats, and they’re healthy too. • Flour: I prefer to use whole wheat flour for dog biscuits for the extra nutritional value. Other types of flour are fine to use, as long as you know your pup isn’t allergic. • Peanut Butter: This thickens the mixture into a dough, and adds tasty peanut butter flavor! Use a natural peanut butter and check the ingredients list–do not use anything with Xylitol (an artificial sweetener), which is not safe for dogs. • Egg: This binds the ingredients together to form a pet-friendly cookie dough. • Water: Adds a bit of moisture to help make the dough pliable. • Honey: This sweetens the flavor just a little bit. • Frosting: If you want to add a frosting for a bit of decoration, you’ll need more peanut butter and honey, plus hot water and cornstarch. and will be so excited! WHAT’S IN THIS DOG TREATS RECIPE? Note: Dogs can have allergies just like people, so while these ingredients are all safe for dogs in gen- eral, make sure you know what your friend can and cannot eat. I recommend giving them a small bite to test these treats out before you start using them regularly.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE DOG TREATS • 2 1 /

7. Slowly add in the water 1 tablespoon at a time until you have reached the consistency that you would like. For a thinner frosting, add more water. 3-4 tablespoons hot water 8. Add the frosting to a piping bag and pipe designs on top of each dog treat. 9. Frost the treats with the peanut butter/honey mix- ture for an even more tempting cookie. INCIDENTALS • Flour: Some dogs are allergic to flour/wheat. If you want to make these wheat-free, you can use rice flour or coconut flour as a replacement. These alternate flours will work, but might change the consistency a bit. Thanks so much to the readers who wrote in about this! • Peanut Butter: Some peanut butter brands are in- cluding xylitol to cut the sugar in their peanut butter. Do not use any peanut butter containing xylitol as it is toxic to dogs. Just check for natural peanut butter and check the ingredients. • Honey: Avoid giving honey to immunocompromised dogs and dogs under one year old! Typically, when you are using a royal frosting for cookies, you will make two different types of frosting consistency— a thicker frosting for the outline, and a thinner frosting to flood the inside with. You don’t have to do this, but this is what you can do if you would like to go the extra mile for your furry friend. With the thicker frosting, create the outline of your de- sign and wait for it to dry for about 10 minutes. When you make the thicker frosting, you probably only need 2-3 ta- blespoons of water. The important thing is that it is thick enough to hold its shape, but thin enough so that you can squeeze it through a piping tip. Fill in the outline with the thinner frosting and smooth it out with the tip of your finger. When you make the thin frosting, you will need 3-4 tablespoons of water, and maybe more depending on how smooth of a finish you would like to have. • Storage: Store homemade peanut butter dog treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two months or in the freezer for up to eight months.

2 cups whole wheat flour 300 grams (see note)

• 1 large egg 50 grams • 1 cup peanut butter 270 grams (see note) • 1 cup water 227 grams • 2 tablespoons honey 43 grams (see note) FOR THE FROSTING • 2 tablespoons peanut butter 34 grams • 1 tablespoon honey 21 grams 1 / 3 cup cornstarch 37 grams (can also use potato starch or arrowroot powder) • 3-4 tablespoons hot water 43-57 grams RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT • Kitchen Scale (optional) • Baking Sheet • Rolling Pin • Piping Tip Set INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside. 2. In a large bowl, combine flour and the egg. Add the peanut butter, water, and honey, and stir until you have a stiff dough. The dough becomes very firm and sticky. You may need to use your hands, or the paddle attachment on your mixer. 2 1 / 2 cups whole wheat flour, 1 large egg, 1 cup peanut butter, 1 cup water, 2 tablespoons honey 3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough about 1 / 2 -inch thick and use a cookie cutter to make fun shapes. The treats barely spread and rise, so get cre- ative with your shapes. 4. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until golden. Once done, set aside to cool. (If you have smaller cookies, use less time, otherwise the bottom might burn.) 5. To make the frosting, combine the peanut butter and honey in a microwavable bowl, and heat in the micro- wave in 15 second increments, stirring in between, until melted. 2 tablespoons peanut butter, 1 tablespoon honey 6. Add the melted peanut butter mixture to the corn- starch and stir until just combined. 1 / 3 cup cornstarch

NUTRITION INFORMATION Serving: 1 Treat; Calories: 132kcal (7%) Carbohydrates: 15g (5%) Protein: 5g (10%) Fat: 7g (11%) Saturated Fat: 1g (6%) Polyunsaturated Fat: 2g Monounsaturated Fat: 3g Trans Fat: 0.001g Cholesterol: 8mg (3%) Sodium: 56mg (2%) Potas- sium: 118mg (3%) Fiber: 2g (8%) Sugar: 3g (3%) Vitamin A: 12IU Vitamin C: 0.01mg Calcium: 12mg (1%) Iron: 1mg (6%) CAN I MAKE THESE PEANUT BUTTER DOG BISCUITS A DIFFERENT FLAVOR? While peanut butter dog treats seem to be a universally- loved flavor, you can absolutely change up these biscuits for your pup. Use other nut butters if you know your dog likes them and can digest them. You can also use an equal amount of plain pumpkin puree or plain mashed sweet potato instead to make cookies for your dog. But if you use different ingredients, keep an eye on the con- sistency of the dough—you want it to be quite firm and sticky. Add a smaller amount of these ingredients incrementally un- til it becomes firm enough to roll out and cut. HOW TO STORE HOMEMADE TREATS Once fully cooled, store homemade peanut butter dog bis- cuits in an airtight container in the refrigerator, for up to two months. This recipe makes 24 cookies, so you’ll have plenty to share whenever your dog needs a healthy treat. HOW TO FREEZE This easy recipe for dog treats can be stored in the freezer for up to eight months. I recommend placing a pan of them in the freezer for about an hour, then transferring them to a freezer- safe bag or container. This will prevent them from sticking together, so you can grab as many as you need, and keep the rest in storage. Move them to the fridge to thaw.

FAQ 1. Is peanut butter safe for dogs to eat? Yes, peanut butter is generally considered safe for dogs to eat. As I’ve mentioned, I recom- mend using a natural peanut butter. Unsalted varieties are great, and you can even find pea- nut butters brands that are made for dogs. Be sure to check the ingredients list, and avoid anything that contains Xylitol, or other artifi- cial sweeteners. 2. Can you use all-purpose flour in dog treats? Yes, all-purpose flour works too. I prefer whole wheat flour, but all-purpose is safe, as long as your dog isn’t allergic. 3. Can I make these homemade dog treats wheat-free? If your pup is allergic to wheat, use a flour alternative, like coconut flour or rice flour. However, it may change the consistency of the dough a bit. 4. Are these homemade dog cookies healthy? Yes, all of the ingredients in this dog treats rec- ipe are considered safe, healthy, and nutrition- al. Peanut butter contains essential vitamins and healthy fats, and the whole wheat flour has extra nutritional value as well. Honey contains a lot of sugar (of course), but we only use a small amount. 5. What kind of cookie cutter should I use? You can use any type or shape of cookie cutter you like, including the classic dog bone shape, Christmas and holidays shapes, hearts, and more. If you don’t have a cookie cutter, use the rim of a glass to cut out circles. Find a Custom- ized Cookie Cutter for your dog’s breed on Etsy for more fun options. 6. Are these peanut butter dog treats safe for people to eat? Yes! We’re using ingredients that are safe for both dogs and people. While I wouldn’t recom- mend snacking on these, if a little one gets their hands on them, they’ll be okay! 7. Can I make these dog cookies crunchier? This recipe makes treats that are nice and chewy. If your dog would prefer a crunchier biscuit, roll out the dough really thin. You could also keep them in the oven at a lower tempera- ture (200°F) for a while to help them dry out and crisp up.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Becky Hardin founded The Cookie Rookie in 2013 because she wanted and needed to learn how to cook. She had just got- ten married (and was over 30!), and the idea of cooking for one, let alone two, was scary. Even

chopping an onion seemed overwhelming. With the help of her Mom, Susie, she started documenting her journey to learn how to cook, and in the process conquered the kitchen. She realized that cooking can be so much easier and more fun than she ever imagined. If she can do it, you can do it!
