Showsight March 2017

MANY OF US TRAVEL TO NEW YORK EVERY FEBRUARY FOR WHAT WE CALL “THE GARDEN.” WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WESTMINSTER MEMORY, EITHER IN PERSON, VIEWED ON TV OR HEARD FROM SOMEONE ELSE?

I have many fond memories of my visit to Westminster. My favorite Westminster memory is a bit selfish as it is when my Tibetan Terrier, “Bentley” (AM GCHS/CAN GCH Barnstorm To-Jo B’en Wicked @ Adominos By Dzine), won the breed. I have shown at the Garden before, but this was the first dog I owned that attended the Garden and my first Breed win. It was exciting to see his breeder, Lynn Meyer, present him like she always does—perfect- ly! –Rhonda Bailey When Joe Tacker announced at Westminster, “It’s the German Shepherd! Champion Covy-Tucker Hill’s Manhattan has just won Best in Show and his breeders are here!” Cappy Pottle and I were beyond thrilled, as were James Moses, han- dler, Sharon Newcomb, trainer, the lovely Jane Firestone, owner, Con- nie Beckhardt, dear friend and co- breeder with Danny Dwyier of CH Lakeside’s Gilligans Island, that was Manhattan’s grandfather. It was a family affair never ever to be for- gotten by us and hundreds of oth- er German Shepherd enthusiasts. The match of Manhattan’s mother Grand Victrix CH Covy’s Rosemary of Tucker Hill to Gilligan’s Island is a constant reminder that quality begets quality. –Gloria Birch My favorite moment was win- ning the Hound Group under Judge Joe Tacker in 1973 with CH Khay- am’s Apollo, owned by Dr. Doyle Rogers. –Eugene Blake In 1986, Michael J. Sauve judged Pembroke Welsh Corgis at West- minster and Anne Rodgers Clark judged the Herding Group. Heron- sway Corgis had two entries that

year—a class dog that I showed to WD and finished his championship there and a Champion dog, CH Her- onsway Free Style, UDT, ROMX, PT, “Tyler”, that was shown by his own- er, Tibby Chase. It was the first time Tibby had ever shown a dog at the Garden—a goal of hers ever since she was a child growing up the NYC area and was taken to Westminster many times by her father. She and Tyler won BOB, which was quite an upset because the big-winning professionally-handled Pembroke Welsh Corgi was also in the entry! Needless to say, Tibby and I were both VERY excited and thrilled about the win—a dream come true for both of us! But then we real- ized that Tibby and Tyler would be showing in the Herding Group that evening (quite a dressy affair) and Tibby had nothing special to wear! So off we went on a shop- ping spree to Macy’s and bought Tibby an entire new outfit, suit- able to that occasion. Even though Tyler was not chosen by Mrs. Clark that night, I was very proud to have Tibby and Tyler representing Heronsway Corgis in the Herding Group at Westminster Kennel Club! –Anne H. Bowes The best for me would be the honor of judging Best in Show in 2009 from seven fabulous dogs! –Sari Brewster Tietjen I loved the year that they brought back former Best in Show winners and showcased them before that year’s BIS. It was so exciting; they should do it again! –Anonymous My fondest memory is taking my granddaughter, Amy Beard, to the Garden so she could participate as a Junior. I had exhibited my own
