THE GARDEN: MEMORIES PAST & MEMORIES MADE

Victory both took a Best of Breed under Judge Mrs. Doris Wear. My husband, Bob and I owned both dogs. I handled the Whippet, Kari and Bob Forsyth handled the Grey- hound, “Vicky”. Both dogs made the cut and Vicky went on to a Group 4. What a thrill for fairly new exhibi- tors—two dogs winning BOB at the Garden! –Joan Goldstein What could top going Best of Breed and Best of Opposite with lit- termates that I breed, both owner handled. It was a day to remember! They are GCHS Krisma’s Xman First Class, “Xavier” and sister GCH Kris- ma’s Xanthe And The Kings Child, “Reagan”. And then to look up into the crowd and feel the immensity of Madison Square Garden and pride in showing in the Terrier Group there! –Lois Grier My favorite memory would be judging the Herding Group in 2006! –Richard Gschwender My first trip to Westminster and New York City was a high school graduation gift from my parents. They were convinced that a young kid would not return from NYC alive, but I did survive. The show was at the previous Garden. I had the great joy and memory of watch- ing Walter Goodman go Best in Show with a beautiful Skye Terrier. –Ron Hammond My favorite memory was judging the Toy Group at the Garden. Chet Collier was very worried about the carpet as it has rippled in sev- eral placed. He said to me, “Dawn, whatever you do, don’t step back.” I was so worried about falling that I didn’t have to worry about being nervous! It was a wonderful line up and I had a awesome evening. –Dawn Hansen Back in the 80s when you could show class dogs, the late- great Irving Eldridge pulled my class bitch out, and had her run off against the number one Brittany in the country. I think I was 17 or 18 years old and it was heady stuff! He eventually did the right thing and gave my “Katie” BOS over

around eight bitch specials and sent the beautiful boy to the group. It is a Westminster memory that I cherish. It was against great com- petition, under a fabulous judge whom I still admire—and wish was still here—and with a lovely bitch that I sure wish hadn’t turned up to be dysplastic! –Karen Hanson Carrying the late Jane Kay from the Affinia to the Hotel Penn because there was a snowstorm. (2006 maybe?) She hated the white stuff. –Anonymous My favorite memory is hearing the crowd chanting, “Harry, Harry, Harry!” during Best in Show when our Dandie Dinmont, “Harry”, AM/ AUS CH Hobergay’s Finneus Fogg, compete for Best in Show. I had never heard such dramatic support for any exhibit at Westminster, nor have I heard it since. Just thinking about that moment gives me goose bumps! –Jean Heath I grew up in Toronto and was dog crazy, but never had the chance to experience Westminster until decades later when my first show dog was invited to attend. Standing in the Terrier ring at Madi- son Square Garden took my breath away! Strolling with my husband and Norwich Terrier “Joey” through Times Square—the area all decked out to celebrate the canine visi- tors—was surreal. To be surround- ed by throngs of spectators anxious to connect with my dog was an honor that I will forever cherish. –Dianne Just Stepping out on the green car- pet at 5:30 in the morning at the Garden, with no one else on the floor in the rings and soaking in the magic of what was to be the day to come. –Andy Kalmanash I have so many, including sev- eral that go with multiple success- ful trips for Loteki Papillons. My first trip in 1985 was so exciting. Unfortunately the day before I left I suffered a torn cornea, my doctor was not going to allow me to go, but since I had a traveling compan- ion that was a nurse he allowed

“IT WAS A WONDERFUL LINE UP...”
