THE GARDEN: MEMORIES PAST & MEMORIES MADE

me to go, but I had my eye covered with bandages and a black eye patch. Maxwell Riddle was there. He came over introduced himself to me, as I was the “prettiest pirate he had ever seen”. What a thrill for me to meet this well respected long time all-around judge. The show went well also, as class dogs were allowed and the two Papillons we brought went WB to finish and WD/BOW. I am so happy to have had so many successful trips, but wonderful memories of my trips to NYC. I could tell stories of some of the escapades, so much fun. I will be sitting at home watching this year as I have for the past 10 years. –Lou Ann King This is a memory of my first Westminster with my Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, “Charlie”. I was waiting to go in the ring and as you can imagine I was a mass of nerves. I am surprised I could even hear them call her number, I was so nervous. They just started to go in when a spectator was walking by on the upper bleachers and knocked a soda cup down and it went all done the side of Charlie’s coat, show side of course. I was frantically brush- ing off the soda as we ran into the ring. She showed her heart as usual and we ended with a Select. I was so proud of her and so happy I made it through without any more incidents. It turned out great, so it’s a memory that is now one of my favorites though at the time, it was a nightmare come true. I love that show especially in per- son—the drama, excitement and seeing all the dogs that you have only heard about. It is two fantastic days of education and enjoyment. –Elena Landa My favorite memory was in 1999 when John Oulton won Best in Show with the Papillon of all time—”Kirby”, CH Loteki Supernat- ural Being. –Anonymous I have so many wonderful memories of showing and judg- ing at Westminster going back 45 years. The thrill of stepping out onto the floor as the Best in Show judge in 2014 made for a memory I

shall never, ever forget. I get goose- bumps every time I think of that incredible line-up. –Betty Regina Leininger It was thrilling to see a Wire- haired Vizsla in the Sporting Group for the first time as a AKC recog- nized breed. –Kathy Lormis My favorite memory was in 2013 when my Border Collie bitch, GCHB Wimzical Wild Wonderful Trucolorz, “Izzy”, won Select Bitch under Judge Jimmy Moses. She is my breeding, which makes it all the sweeter. –Donna Mallory I have so many favorite memo- ries! Watching Clara Alford handle CH Chik T’sun Of Caversham to BIS under top Terrierman, George Hartman, on TV. Being there for my first time in 1961 and seeing Annie go BIS with the Toy Poodle Cap- poquin Little Sister and being ring- side feet away from the Bulldog CH Vardona Frosty Snowman. Sitting on the benches with Amanda West and her top Frenchies and discuss- ing the breed. Seeing the exquisite Afghan, CH Kabik The Challenger. Being there at the 1969 blizzard year and watching Walter Goodman win BIS with his “Suzy”, CH Glamoor Good News. Seeing and storing endless memories of the outstanding Terri- ers that have stood in those rings throughout the years—for me the highlights were Bill McFadden and “Mick”, the Kerry; Bobby Fisher and the best Irish that I have ever seen and to which I awarded my very first BIS, CH Tralee Rowdy Red; Peter with “Coco”, CH Crac- knor Cause Celebre; Gabe with that exquisite Wire “Skye”, CH Afterall Painting The Sky; plus endless fond memories of watching, listening to and talking with so many truly great dog people. Those “tapes” in my mind are well filed and I can call them back at almost any time to enjoy over and over and over. Thanks for bringing them back! –Ken McDermott What else could it be than judg- ing Best in Show in 2015, especially since it was my one and only BIS
