THESE DOGS ARE GENUINE BIRDBRAINS!
T he multi-talented breeds of the Sporting Group all have one thing in common: a fondness for birds. Whether flushing, pointing or retrieving, the affin- ity these dogs have for feathered fauna is individu- ally expressed by the ability to locate birds hidden among tall grasses, thorny thickets, and flooded marshes. The gundogs’ exceptional sense of smell provides these breeds with a natural advantage in the game of hide-and-seek, since they are hard- wired to “find” without needing much in the way of training. The very best among their ranks, however, can utilize any formal education that’s given with tremendous success in competitions that require the highest levels of performance. It takes a genuine “birdbrain” to compete in—and win—a Field Trial. Sporting dogs aren’t just capable; they’re also extraordinarily attractive. The undeniable beauty of bird dogs has been appreci- ated on the bench and in the field for as long as dog shows have been organized. Physical charm, as well as form and function, have all but defined these breeds since their recognition as distinct purebreds. One simply has to consider the variety of coat colors found among the field dogs to recognize their broad appeal: lem- on (Pointer), sedge (Chesapeake Bay Retriever); mahogany (Irish Setter); golden liver (Sussex Spaniel); silver-gray (Weimaraner). The breathtaking beauty of the natural world is richly reflected in the spectrum of colors seen in every Sporting Group. Of course, bird dogs are also celebrated for their willing- ness to work in partnership with the hunter and the handler. An unwavering willingness to please in both the field and in the ring is only surpassed by the devotion these dogs extend to their fami- lies at home. At the end of a long day’s hunt or an extended week- end of shows, the pointer, retriever, setter, and spaniel breeds are only too happy to relax by the hearth or on the bed, as faithful in repose as they are in action. Through the articles and interviews assembled in this edition, SHOWSIGHT has endeavored to celebrate the capable and col- orful breeds of the Sporting Group through the words of the breeders, judges, and exhibitors who know them best.
