PORTUGUESE WATER DOG

ALEXIA RODRIGUEZ POTRERO CANE CORSOS AND LOWCHEN BREEDER INTERVIEW BY ALLAN REZNIK

Where did you grow up? Do you come from a doggie family, and if not, how did the interest in breeding and showing purebred dogs begin? I grew up in Catonsville, Maryland, in the 1980s and ‘90s. My mom was a single mother who had never owned dogs. Around age 11 or 12, I began to really want a dog. My mom made me go to the library and start reading about dog breeds. She had minimal, yet strict, parameters for any potential dog. It had to be small, and couldn’t be a barker. She was especially insistent that we find a breed of dog called a Japanese Chin. In the books we read, it said they were small and didn’t bark. My mother also knew this was an extremely rare breed, so she figured we would never find one in the newspaper. In 1988, the only way we knew to find a dog was to look at the classified listings or go to a pet store. After what felt like an eternity of studying dog breed books and scouring the newspaper each Sunday, we happened to go to a pet store at the mall. Lo and behold, there sat a black-and-white Japanese Chin puppy! My mother didn’t have much money and I remember her putting the purchase on a credit card. I was absolutely ecstatic! We named him Ureshi Mitsu and he was my life. A few months after buying him, a flyer circulated at school for a “fun match dog show.” I remember the flyer said, “ALL AKC REGISTERED BREEDS ALLOWED.” I was so excited because my Japanese Chin was AKC registered and I could hardly wait to go to the show and do something with my dog. We arrived at the fun match and I had no idea what class to enter, but the one that said “Junior Showmanship” sounded appropriate so that’s what we entered. I placed fourth in a class of five and I was hooked! Who were your mentors in the sport? Please elaborate on their influence. My early mentors growing up were George and Sherrie Howes of Hiswill Hounds, Chad Howard of Chaseland, and Faith Milton of Huang Kung Japanese Chin. As an adult, I’ve been lucky enough to have many mentors and like-minded individuals who I can collaborate with on breeding plans, talk openly about temperament and structure, and ask for feedback on chal- lenges that come up. I feel very fortunate to have surrounded myself with a small group of breed- ers who share a similar vision for the future of our breeds.

BREEDER INTERVIEW WITH ALEXIA RODRIGUEZ, POTRERO CANE CORSOS AND LOWCHEN

in a temperature-controlled building. We also have acreage and live in a very rural area. I am able to let the dogs run our property and go on hikes in our locality. It’s important to me that I give each dog individual attention every day, either by training them or exercising them with a run. I feel fortunate to be able to make my living as a professional dog trainer, which allows me this flexibility in my daily routine. Please comment positively on the present condition of both your breeds, and what trends might bear watching. Cane Corso: I was asked to judge the CCAA Top 20 event in Houston, in July 2023. I was pleasantly surprised that the dogs and bitches were of correct size and substance, with pleasing head- pieces and seemingly stable temperaments. In the past, the trend had been to promote dogs that were oversized. Now I see the trend going back to producing a more functional animal, which is a major, positive shift. I’m also seeing more Corsos competing in performance as well as conformation. This is a wonderful trend for our Working breed.

“Iara” 2021 Bitch of the Year, Multiple Group Placing GCHS Garmr Potrero Iara Of Our Yuba. Owned by Silas and Hanna Thompson, Alexia Rodriguez, and Kristina Thorson.

The Potrero Cane Corsos and Lowchen are widely known, high- ly successful and well respected. What breeding philosophies do you adhere to? With the Corsos, if you want to make lasting improvements in the breed, you have to have what I call a “healthy appetite for risk and an even healthier dose of optimism.” The Corso has a lot of challenges when making choices for breeding. Temperament, health, and working ability are the top three things I always con- sider when putting two dogs together. Temperament has ALWAYS been and always will be my NUMBER 1 factor in any breeding decision. For me, no amount of perfect conformation traits, titles, or wins will warrant using a dog with a poor temperament in my breeding program. This goes for the Lowchen as well. In Lowchen, when I was planning my first few litters, I relied heavily on my mentor, Gillian Robertson, to guide me with regard to choosing which pedigrees to move forward with. Gillian was instrumental in helping me define what I wanted, offering me his- tory on the dogs in each pedigree, and helping me choose those early puppies to move forward with. Now I feel I have established a type that I prefer and is promi- nent when you see one of my Lowchen. The tough part in Lowchen is getting enough dogs to outcross to and keep the type strong and consistent. By partnering with fellow Lowchen breeder Jennie Chen, she and I have managed to help make this happen. I jokingly call her “my enabler.” How many dogs do you typically house? Tell us about your current facilities and how the dogs are maintained. In addition to breeding, I am also a professional dog trainer. We have about 10 to 15 dogs on the property at any time. We have four Corsos that are permanent residents and four Lowchen that are also permanent residents. We also have a pet Frenchie as well as a Malinois for sporty things. We have two big dogs that live in the house full-time, along with the “littles.” Every- one else is in our kennel. I have outdoor runs on concrete for day- time use, but at night or when we aren’t home, everyone is crated

BREEDER INTERVIEW WITH ALEXIA RODRIGUEZ, POTRERO CANE CORSOS AND LOWCHEN

“Charm” BISS Multiple Group Placing, Reproduction Champion GCHS Potrero You Had Me At Hello IGP BH RN. Charm is shown winning Select Dog at the CCAA Regional Specialty from the Veterans class.

Lowchen: At our National in June 2023, in Vallejo, California, the competition was truly stunning. You could have made a case for most class animals to win points. The Best of Breed class was exceptional. I believe the depth of quality has increased tremen- dously since I started. I also see a major uptick in popularity of the breed, at least on social media. With the very few breeders we have and the small litter sizes, I don’t feel limited popularity is a bad thing. We need people to want Lowchen as companions just as much as we need folks to want them as competition dogs. The sport has changed greatly since you first began as a breeder-exhibitor. What are your thoughts on the current state of the fancy and the declining number of breeders? How do we encourage newcomers to join us and remain in the sport? I think that in order to attract and keep new folks, we’ve all got to relax. Relax our dress code, relax our emotions, relax our judgment, and relax our complaining on social media. If we look at the shows that attract the most exhibitors and spectators, I notice that the kennel clubs that make the experience fun, with casual dress and a theme that every- one can take part in, are some of the most well-attended and talked-about dog shows. Being a West Coast person, I obviously look at Woofstock as an example. Another improvement could be making entering a dog show easier to do online. Have you ever coached a new owner through entering their dog in a show? It’s daunting and very confusing, unless you have someone walk you through it step by step. I think that superintendents need to update their online systems with responsive website design as it relates to the entire system. I feel this is more urgent than updating with real-time results. While I, too, value longstanding dog show traditions and the prestige of our most famous dog shows, we need to understand that for the regular person, those types of shows can feel intimidating and not a realistic hobby. We need to market our hobby as an inclusive and fun place for a family to attend, and hopefully participate in together. I love the idea of having special attractions like agility tryouts or obedience tryouts which offer same-day entry. We need to market these events in our community more effectively. Perhaps school flyers with details for an upcoming, local dog show would be a great way to get more spectators out to attend.

BREEDER INTERVIEW WITH ALEXIA RODRIGUEZ, POTRERO CANE CORSOS AND LOWCHEN

Where do you see your breeding program in the next decade or two? In 10 or 20 years, I hope that I’m able to continue to produce quality dogs that excel in whatever venue they are placed in. I also hope to dabble in a Sporting breed down the road. I absolutely love the pointing breeds and really want to immerse myself in hunting dog training at some point.

Land Down Under JUDGING IN THE

BY WALTER SOMMERFELT

B efore the COVID outbreak, I was invited by the Weimaraner Club of Victoria and the Hungarian Vizsla Club of Greater Victoria to judge their upcoming 2020 Specialties in Melbourne, Australia. Needless to say, the COVID situation changed those plans. Melbourne, Australia, was one of the last places in the world to open back up and allow visitors to come back in. With the country back open, I was again invited to officiate at their September 2023 events. Along with those invitations, Carol and I both received an invitation from Adrian Adams to judge the Queensland Gundog Association show the week before, in Brisbane. International judging assignments are always exciting as they allow us to see not only the dogs but also how the shows are run in other countries. The added benefit to this trip was our ability to also stay and travel to several areas and enjoy the beauty of Australia. Australian shows generally follow the FCI model with a few exceptions. First, there are no “Specials” or “Champion Only” classes. In each breed, the dogs and bitches are judged separately just as we do in the States. However, all compete for one “Challenge Winner,” so it is possible to have a Champion entered in every class. Once the classes are judged, the winners of each class come back in for the awarding of the “Challenge Certificate.” Following that award, the second-place dog from the class of the winner returns for the awarding of “Reserve,” just as in our country. The same process is done for the bitches. After the completion of bitches, the dog and bitch then compete for Best of Breed, and once selected, the Reserve to the Best of Breed winner returns for the Reserve Best of Breed. So, it is possible for both the Best of Breed and Reserve to be of the same sex; there is no Best of Opposite Sex. Following breed judging, all the Breed winners compete for Best in Group (or in the case of the Queensland Gundog Association show, Best in Show). After the Best in Group is selected, the Reserve Best of Breed winner of that breed comes back in to also compete for Reserve Best in Group. The only placements at the show were Best in Group and Reserve Best in Group, with no other placements offered. I was also told that each state may have slight variations on the Group and Best in Show placements.

INTERNATIONAL JUDGING ASSIGNMENTS ARE ALWAYS EXCITING AS THEY ALLOW US TO SEE NOT ONLY THE DOGS BUT ALSO HOW THE SHOWS ARE RUN IN OTHER COUNTRIES.

GREATER SWISS MOUNTAIN DOG

JUDGING IN THE LAND DOWN UNDER

In Australia, “Cocker Spaniels” are the equivalent of our English Cockers, and our Cocker Spaniels compete all together as “American Cocker Span- iels.” At the Gundog show, my Best of Breed winner was a young, solid-black Cocker Spaniel, Madanwitt Five and Dime , owned by Mrs. M. Hewitt, who was later selected by Carol as her Group/Best in Show winner. Runner-Up in Show was the Hungarian Vizsla, Aust. Ch. Elettears Insugent , owned by M. & A. Richards, D. Winch and P. Johnson, from the Intermediate Dog Class. The Queensland dog people also own and share a magnificent facility that is an extremely well-maintained and well-lighted show grounds. Since the weather there is very similar to that of Florida, all of the shows were held outdoors, with some under the lights in the evening when the temperature is cooler. The show was held on a Friday evening and started at 4:00 p.m. and was over before 9:00 p.m. They also have a great clubhouse with a full com- mercial kitchen and plenty of room for meetings and other club functions. Following our judging, we were able to enjoy the City of Brisbane for a couple of days. Brisbane is a very beautiful and clean city with a great water- front area near the river. It is a city full of people walking everywhere, and the restaurants and clubs were bustling every day. We had a chance to visit the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary where a fantastic collection of native Australian wildlife is cared for. It was a great experience as we were up close and personal with koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, reptiles, and native birds and other species. We were also able to visit the Opal Museum and learn about the mining of these gems from a very desolate area of the country. Adrian and his wonderful wife and family were great hosts and they took us to the Gold Coast where we were able to spend a few days. While there, not only were we able to enjoy the beach, we had an opportunity to go whale watching where we were lucky enough to come upon several different pods, with the largest being five of these magnificent creatures. Not far from the Gold Coast, about an hour and a half into the mountains, was the subtropi- cal rainforest which was another treat to see the unusual flora of the area. In some ways it reminded us of the Great Smoky Mountains, but it had so many unique trees, flowers, and waterfalls. From the Gold Coast, Adrian again took us to the airport to catch our flight to Melbourne.

Carol Sommerfelt holds a koala at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane.

A King Penguin welcomes visitors at the Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium.

Melbourne is also a very busy city full of people walking everywhere. One of the most interesting things about all three cities we visited is the use of pub- lic transportation, which is extremely inexpensive, or in the case of the Melbourne city loop, free for travel- ers. It sure makes getting around safe, efficient, and very low-to-no cost.

JUDGING IN THE LAND DOWN UNDER

Another unique feature is that in Australia, there is generally “no tipping” suggested or expected. In Melbourne, we had a chance to visit both the zoo and the aquarium, and both were great. The zoo had several great exhibits. They had an amazing number of giant tortoises, a great elephant breeding program, and sea lions, little blue penguins, meerkats, monkeys, apes, and reptiles as well as so many other great exhibits to see. The layout was circular and easy to navigate for viewing the various exhibits. In Australia, the children go to school year-round, with several 2-4 week breaks during the year. During the two weeks of our visit it was “spring break,” as September is the spring down under and our winter is their summer. I have visited several aquariums in my life, but the penguin exhibit at the Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium is truly one to see; a great exhibit filled with the King and Gentoo species. They were fun to watch and so entertaining, and since it was breeding season, watching them setting up their nests was a different experience. Along with the penguins, there were numerous exhibits of sealife through- out. They have a unique breeding program of Leafy and Weedy Sea Dragons as well as seahorses and other delicate and majestic related species. You will find jellyfish and sharks, crocodiles, starfish, tropical reef fish species and other ocean species, rays, and sawfish, as well as numerous rainforest creatures. You will also find the Queens Market in Melbourne where a variety of goods, souvenirs, and authentic Australian goods can be found along with fresh meat, vegetables, and other produce and foodstuffs. On Saturday, we traveled to the KCC Park State Dog Centre, the showgrounds for the canine community in Melbourne. This facility sits on over 70 acres and is owned by the dog community, just like the one in Brisbane. The facility is fantastic. Like Brisbane, it has well-lit, permanent outdoor ring set-ups. The difference here is, since the weather is different, it also has a huge indoor arena as well as a kitchen, clubhouse, a huge library, and a very large and interesting dog museum. I was told the grounds are in use from 40 to 50 weekends per year. It is a site all of us would love to own. One interesting item I was told about is that the Australian government in the area has jurisdiction over the shows when it comes to weather and the can- cellation of shows. I was told that when the temperature reaches a certain high, THE SHOW MUST BE CANCELLED. Just like cancellations in the US, there are no refunds of fees and, in such cases, the kennel clubs have absolutely no say in the decision. On Saturday, the Hungarian Vizsla Club of Victoria held its specialty. I had a great entry of high-quality Vizslas and found my Best of Breed in the Veterans Class where Supreme Ch. Dual Ch. (T) Graebrook Kausin Kaos ET , owned by Julie & Craig Wills of Graebrook Kennels, put on a spectacular show and took the top honor. The Challenge Bitch came from the Puppy Class, Gold- chief Nymeria , owned by L. Schultze. The runner-up Best in Show also came from the Puppy Dog Class, Graebrook Mr. Fahrenheit , owned by Jill & Craig Wills, while the runner-up Challenge Bitch was the Australian-bred Grae- brook Sins Of A Rouge (AI) , also owned by the Wills. At the specialties, I was asked to critique the top three in each class. Although critiquing is not some- thing we do here and it does take a little time, I think it helped to give insight into what I was looking for in coming to my decisions. I can’t thank Cinnamon Clark, Julie Wills, and my Ring Steward, Pauline Grutzner, enough for all their kind hospitality. Sunday was the Weimaraner Club of Victoria Specialty and it was dif- ferent for me because Long-Haired Weimaraners are also an accepted breed in Australia. I found the Longhairs to be quite appealing and of very good

Best of Breed was awarded from the Veterans Class, Supreme Ch. Dual Ch. (T) Graebrook Kausin Kaos ET.

The runner-up Best in Show came from the Puppy Dog Class, Graebrook Mr. Fahrenheit.

Challenge Bitch came from the Puppy Class, Goldchief Nymeria.
