BREEDERS Q&A

THE AKC IS ANOTHER EXCELLENT SOURCE OF INFORMATION ABOUT PUREBRED DOGS IN GENERAL AND THE SPORT OF PUREBRED DOGS. As with any breed or topic, it is easy to find misinformation or incorrect information on the Internet, and there is plenty of it out there about the Sloughi.

There have been some negative changes as well. Gaily car- ried tails or tails curling over the topline are still appearing in the show ring. Rounded croups and toplines are still appearing, as well as dogs that are obviously longer than tall, which are very incorrect in the breed. In addition, poor pigment is a problem—depigmented noses and eye rims, and dogs with depigmented or white nails. In addition, dogs carrying the gene(s) for long hair (feathering) are now in the US. Feathering is a disqualification in both the AKC and FCI standards and is inconsistent with authentic breed type. 3. Do you think your breed is portrayed accurately online and on social media? How is it represented correctly? How is it misrepresented? The best place to find accurate information about the Sloughi is on the Parent Club website: http://www.sloughi-international. com or on the Parent Club Facebook Page: facebook.com/American. Sloughi.Association. The AKC is another excellent source of information about pure- bred dogs in general and the sport of purebred dogs. As with any breed or topic, it is easy to find misinformation or incorrect information on the Internet, and there is plenty of it out there about the Sloughi. 4. What advice would you offer SHOWSIGHT Magazine about providing breed-specific information about your breed? How can we help to educate the general public as well as inform breeders, exhibitors, and conformation judges? Please rely on the Parent Club to provide you information about the breed. We are happy and honored to work with SHOWSIGHT to provide accurate, unbiased information to educate breeders, exhibitors, and judges about the Sloughi.

We have bred and/or owned the top-winning Sloughis in the US for every year since AKC fully recognized the breed in 2016, including the breed’s top-winning AKC Sloughi in history, the first AKC Champion, the first AKC Grand Champion, the first AKC RBIS Sloughi, the first AKC Group-winning Sloughi, the first Hound Group-placing Sloughis, the first Grand Champion Bronze Sloughi, the first Westminster Best of Breed Sloughi, the first Coursing Ability Sloughi, the first Fast CAT-titled Sloughi, the first Trick Dog-titled Sloughi, the first Rally-titled Sloughi, and the most-titled Sloughi in US history (with 38 titles and counting). We are the only AKC Breeder of Merit Sloughi breeder, and we adhere strictly to the Code of Ethics of the Parent Club, the Ameri- can Sloughi Association. Since the Sloughi became eligible for AKC championship, we have owned and/or bred 14 AKC champions, including eight home- bred champions. (Prior to AKC recognition, we had many more UKC champions and grand champions since the breeding of our first litter in 2006.) Our breeding program focuses strongly on country of origin bloodlines, and to that end, since 2009, we have imported 13 Sloughis from Morocco, which is more “country of origin imports” than anyone else in the US. Our bloodlines also include Tunisian and Libyan ancestry. 2. In your opinion, what is the current condition of your breed overall? Has your breed changed in ways that you consider to be positive? Any negative changes? The breed has made some notable improvements since it first arrived in the US in 1973. Temperaments have greatly improved, and this is a pleasure to see. In addition, we are seeing better fronts with more correct movement and stronger pasterns. This has con- tributed to an improvement in the effortless, ground-covering gait that the standard requires and that a Sloughi should have.
