In the span of two decades, “Orlando” has come to signify many things to many people in the Sport of Dogs. To the breeders, owners, and handlers of the nation’s top show dogs, the end-of-year celebration can represent a race to the finish line or the beginning of the ride of a lifetime. To Preservation Breed - ers, the show offers a venue where Judges carry on the tradition of evaluating breeding stock. (The Best Bred-By Exhibitor in Show and the Puppy and Junior Stakes competitions are unrivaled in the US.) To Owner-Handlers, the NOHS Finals acknowledges the seriousness with which amateur exhibitors are dedicated to their purebred dogs. To Fanciers of All Ages, the Junior Showmanship Finals introduces tomorrow’s best and brightest handlers. To Performance Event Com - petitors, the National Agility Championship provides a showcase for their efforts. And to America’s legions of devoted dog lovers, Orlando represents our shared devotion to the dogs that bring us all together at year’s end. In this issue, the AKC National Championship’s Event Coordinator, MICHAEL CANALIZO, reviews many of the reasons why this celebration of purebred dogs has achieved “Rock Star” status in little more than two decades. Heading the list of Judges at the 2021 event was DANA CLINE, who offers his thoughts on judging Best in Show. BETH SWEIGART, PAMELA BRUCE, NORMAN KENNEY, EDD E. BIVIN, JOHN - NY SHOEMAKER, SUSAN ST. JOHN-BROWN, AND CHARLES OLVIS provide their reviews as the 2021 Group Judges. AKC Breeder of the Year Honorees, DYANE BALDWIN, SUSAN LACROIX HAMIL, CATHY & MIKE DUGAN, MARY REMER, CONNIE WAGNER, AND GUY & THELMA MAULDIN share their wisdom as Mas - ter Breeders, together with the 2021 Breeder of the Year, DAVID FITZPATRICK. Several of the NOHS Group Judges, including JAMES BROWN, SUSAN ST. JOHN- BROWN, AND MARY WUEST recount their experiences in the big ring, as does PAM LAMBIE who judged the Miscellaneous Classes and selected BIM. PLUIS DAVERN and PHILIP CAPPOZZOLO discuss their experiences as Breed Judges, and DEBBIE MELGREEN talks about her assignment as the Junior Showmanship Finals Judge. Best Junior Handler EMMA ROGERS also provides a glimpse into her experiences at the ANC as well as her plans for the future.
