FROMTHE EXECUTIVE EDITOR EMERITUS

JOSEPHNEILM C GINNIS III

For too many years I was stuck in my office seemingly 24/7 making sure each thing got done. Lately I’ve been able to flex my wings and it’s a welcome change. Two recent trips brought me into close contact with friends of long standing and dogs I much admire, in addition to attending events I was unable to hit in the previous year. My first stop was the hallowed Hatboro shows held near enough to Philadelphia to zoom in unim- peded. The second was in sleepy little Arcadia, Florida, which awoke with a start at a joyful dogshow celebration taking place. Luckily I got to town in time to attend Hatboro Show Chair Robert Thomas’ splendid welcome party on the grounds of his stunning 1660s-era home—which actually backs up to the Hatboro site. Multi- level decks gave all a view of the beautiful landscape, which was

PHOTO: JOE DEPETRO

only rivalled by the great food and drinks on offer and the company present. No one left hungry, and nobody got bored. This function set the tone for what was to be a wonderful Montgomery week. But let’s set aside the social aspect of these shows which is legendary in itself; above all else, as with any dog function I attend, I was there to learn. What a luxury it was to have time, lots of time, to spend with and bounce ideas off the likes of Milan Lint, Connie Clark, Tom Parrotti, Pam Davis, Bobby Thomas, Desi Murphy, Edd Bivin, and Karen Wilson who not only displayed her expertise but also showed her extreme effi- ciency and dedication to her job. Through some mixup we won’t dissect here, at the last minute Mrs. Wilson’s entire judging assignment got shoved back by thirty minutes, meaning even before she began she was half an hour behind. While some less level-headed (or more hot-headed) arbiters might’ve eaten up even more of an already-dwindling day by being offended or accusatory, Karen took the situation into her capable hands and not only per- formed the super job of judging we expect and always see, she made up the time and when she was finished she was right on schedule. And from what I could glean—and I glean well—no exhibitor felt slighted and none felt rushed. That’s a trooper. I was raised to face—and fix—a problem first, then worry about its cause later, especially when the public is involved. In this case it’s a very important public; the people who keep these shows alive. Thank you, Karen, for giving us yet another session of a master class in judging purebred dogs. Congratulations to Hatboro DC and its members for two beautiful and very impressive shows. There is speculation about movings and parnerings among the clubs involved in this four-day marathon, but no doubt these groups will con- tinue to please the fancy and keep their legacies intact. As luck or lack thereof would have it, I had to cut my trip short, missing Devon and Montgomery—and this after having my McGinnis Plaid specially packed. Fortunately we had peo- ple in place to cover the festivities for you here, so I’m happy about that but was sad to leave. Jackie Fogel and Dan Sayers

do their usual masterful job in capturing the magic of Montgomery week, as do the rest of our team as they tackle their respective topics as well. As always, I extend my grati- tude and thanks to our editorial staff whose work I’ll rack up against any. I also send a special shout out to our own Arlene Czech, whose fiftieth anniversary of judging did not escape our attention nor our camera’s lens. (See The Unsinkable Arlene Czech in this issue.) Among many other fascinating subjects contained herein, judges’ use of Standards is addressed—and I am reminded of one of my very favorite stories, not only because it involves one of my favorite dog people, but also one of my very favorite all-around awesome people, my friend the Late Ed Jenner. One night at his dinner table he told this tale, and I haven’t stopped laughing since. Ed judged somewhere and I’m sure he did his usual won- derful job. Well, you can never make everybody happy and a few days later he got a package and a note: “Dear Mr. Jenner: Here’s a copy of our Standard. Obviously you haven’t read it.” With his wry sense of humor, Ed wrote back: “Thank you for your generous gift—but you should’ve sent it to me before I judged.” People suggest to me all the time that dog shows aren’t as fun as they used to be, and I always think “Maybe not for you, but they are for me.” I’ve yet to stop getting great enjoyment out of the people, places and canines that make up our sport. Speaking of which, I want to send out a big burst of love to my friend and yours, Luc Boileau, for no other reason than I haven’t told him so in a while. He’s one of the many reasons I’m still smiling after more than forty years of dog shows. And so are you. I trust this month we’ve made you smile, too. We’ll see you at AKC’s super show in Orlando. Until then, I wish you Happy Thanksgiving and remind you: ShowSight Magazine wishes you all the Best!

MESSAGE FROMTHE PUBLISHER

AJ ARAPOVIC

JUMPING INTO FEAR

Fear is something everyone must face, even if we don’t want to. Well, let’s “go there!” We’re all scared of something. I’m afraid of disappointing my family and friends, and our clients and readers. In fact, I’m scared all the time. I will even admit to having lived with anxiety for a while. (And It still occasionally kicks in!) Whew, I said it. Now it’s out there. Is the world going to come down around me? No. But what is going to happen is that I will feel less afraid of being “found out” or being judged about it. You see, what I do when something scares me is I lock in on my fear and I don’t quit until I do what I set out to accomplish. Whether it’s the fear of heights (which I conquered by looking down from a balcony of a 60-story building, even though I almost fainted), or the fear of making mistakes (which I conquered by surrounding myself with positive and knowledgeable people.) I believe that nothing can control or paralyze us if we let our fears become the catalyst to change our circumstances for the better. After all, what would life be like if everything was easy? I mean, imag- ine it. There would be nothing to overcome. How exciting would that be? You know, the people who make history aren’t the people who have it easy or who say, “I can’t.” They’re the people who say, “You know what? This is my fear, but to hell with it. I’m going to give it a try anyway.” They are the people who just jump right in. And once the door to our fears is knocked open, we usually discover that the bogeyman in the dark closet is just a shadow. There’s really nothing to be afraid of. So, instead of being afraid, instead of shrinking from the things we hide away in our minds, hearts and souls, we should make a list of our fears and tackle each of them one by one. Most of all, we need to believe that challenging our fears can be a gift — one that strengthens us. In some sense, what we fear forces us to reach deep inside to find our personal power in a place where we thought it didn’t exist. Sometimes I think that maybe, just maybe, fears are life’s way of connecting us with others through empathy. They prepare us to share our testimony with those who are going through similar challenges. I know that every time something scares me, I shake my fist in its face and say, “Let’s go. Let’s do this.” I jump into my fear and when I arrive at that new place of perspective, I understand that I’ve shed some of

what was holding me back. I metamorphosize into the being I was born to become and I’m ready to serve others. So, won’t you join me? Let’s let go of our fears. Let’s jump! Happy Holidays from me, Hanifa and our daughters Iryna and Adrianna!

FROM THE ROYAL CANIN SHOW COMMITTEE

O n behalf of the Show Committee of the AKC National Championship Presented By Royal Canin, we’d like to extend a special invitation to each of you to join us this December at the 17th AKC National Championship in Orlando, Florida. Each year we strive to strengthen the AKC National Championship, where the best dogs and the best breeders are rec- ognized by world-class judges. Royal Canin and the American Ken- nel Club, along with our all-breed club partners, Space Coast Kennel Club of Palm Bay, Brevard Kennel Club and the Central Florida Kennel Club offer a week of All-Breed and Specialty Shows leading up to the National Championship on Saturday and Sunday. New to the event in 2017, we’re thrilled to introduce the inaugural AKC/Royal Canin National All-Breed Puppy & Junior Stakes on Friday! For the first time ever, we invite you and your Puppy or Junior (6-18 months) to com- pete with other top breeders from across the country for National titles. We hope that this new Puppy and Junior Competition will be the next step in continuously elevating the event and provide breed- ers and exhibitors yet another reason to make the National Champi- onship a must-attend event. From the beginning, this event was designed to celebrate our breeders and purpose-bred dogs; showcase the best in breeding stock and share our passion to preserve and produce healthy, happy dogs. The National Championship is also an opportunity to showcase all 190 AKC registered breeds and appreciate the importance of breeding for form, function and type. For all of these reasons and the others you hold dear, you have our continued commitment to elevate the National Championship every year. We work hard to make the AKC National Championship a memo- rable experience each and every year and we are so pleased that the AKC National Championship continues to receive tremendous sup- port. Our Show Committee and all of the Associates at Royal Canin and AKC aim to create an unforgettable and enjoyable week and we are gratified that this show has become one of the premiere dog events in the world. We certainly thank you for your continued sup- port of this event. While you’re there, please be sure to visit the Royal Canin booth to learn more about the Crown Partners Breeder Rewards Program, enjoy a free photo shoot brought to you by Aramedia Group, prize giveaways, breeder education, show specials, breeder sweepstakes and much more! Royal Canin will be hosting breed parties from their booth and extending exclusive benefits for Crown Partners including a VIP hospitality lounge that provides ring side seating for Groups during the week and Puppy Stakes finals on Friday! You’ll also want to stop by the AKC booth to check out our newest products and learn about what is going on at AKC. Or you can simply stop by just to say hi—we’d like to get to know you! Best of Luck at the National Championship.

M eet the Del- egates seek- ing AKC Board posi- tions. Times flies! The election for the AKC Board of Direc- tors will take place in March. Here’s an early look and the candidates. I asked each of them for a brief bio and to complete the sentence, “I love the AKC because…” Hope this early introduc-

Sweetwood, Trap Falls Kennel Club Harold “Red” Tatro, III, Fort Worth Kennel Club PETITION CANDIDATES CLASS OF 2022 Carl C. Ashby, III, United States Kerry Blue Terrier Club James R. Dok, Gig Harbor Kennel Club Jan Ritchie Gladstone, Richmond Dog Fanciers Club Ann Wallin, Atlanta Kennel Club employee news department, working on their employee mag- azine and newspaper. After a few years, I moved on to what became a 25-year career in the industrial sector. I was a vice president with a Wall Street consulting firm that engaged in defending com- panies from hostile takeovers; an elected officer for three major public U.S. Industrial corporations, each with annual sales exceeding $3 billion (1969-1980); president of my own financial and public relations consulting firm (1980-1992) and finally, as a partner with Ketchum, Inc., a major U.S. public relations consultant (1992-2000). I was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI), which is a not-for-profit international professional organization for four years and served as its Chairman of the Board and CEO from 1988-89. My experience has included managing large staffs of executives in financial public relations, crisis management, employee information and government relations. At Combus- tion Engineering, Inc., for example, I was elected corporate vice president, marketing and communications, with respon- sibilities for all the above functions; I also was an advisor to the CEO and a member of the Strategic Planning Committee. My consulting firm, Amen & Associates, Inc. client list included: AT&T, Campbell Soup Co., Church & Dwight Co., Inc. (makers of Arm & Hammer products), Friendly Ice Cream Corp., General Signal Corp., Lucent Technologies, Inc., The Thomson Corp., and Nynex Corp., to name a few. I sold my firm to Ketchum, Inc., one of the nation’s top public relations firms, in 1992. In 1994, I was elected a part- ner and named President, Ketchum Corporate Relations, the division responsible for global corporate communications

This will present ideal oppor- tunities to meet them and learn how their special talents may guide our great organization’s future.

ROBERT AMEN NOMINEE, AKC BOARD OF DIRECTORS, CLASS OF 2022

I love the AKC because it has offered me a never-ending opportunity to learn about peo- ple, group dynamics and, most importantly, about dogs. As an exhibitor, trainer, judge, delegate and board member, I have had the opportunity to broaden my knowledge in almost every area of our sports and related activi- ties—breeds and breeding, canine

health, government relations, AKC clubs, the role of the dog in modern society and the resources offered by the AKC to people seeking information. I have been awed by the effort it takes to manage the thousands of events sanctioned by the AKC each year: conformation events, performance events, companion events, et al. Finally, I have learned much more about the responsibilities and role of a board member of a not-for-profit organization. The opportunities have been end- less. Hopefully, I have contributed to the knowledge of others along the way. My wife of 53 years, Barbara, and I live in Stamford, Con- necticut, with our four dogs.I began my career working for the New York Times , first on the radio news desk, then as a news assistant in the Business News Department. I moved on to work for Bell Telephone Labs, a unit of AT&T, in the

consulting—including crisis management, investor relations, internal communications and public relations. After retiring in 2000, I continued as a consultant to Ketchum for six years. I became totally active in the dog world after my retire- ment, beginning with training my Australian Shepherd bitch for obedience competition. After five years of competition, she earned her Obedience Trial Championship. I then went on to become obedience-training director for Port Chester Obedience Training Club, White Plains, New York. During this period, I was a contributing editor for Front and Fin- ish magazine and the obedience editor for The Australian Shepherd Journal , published by The United States Australian Shepherd Association. In 2013, I won a Dog Writers Associa- tion of America “Maxwell Award” for an article that appeared in AKC Family Dog magazine. The sport continued to keep me busy—training three more dogs to their OTCH titles, titling an Afghan in lure coursing, becoming an AKC obedience judge and then being named a Delegate for my club. In 2011, the AKC nominating commit- tee put my name up for the class of 2015 and I was elected to a four-year term. As a board member, I served on the pen- sion committee, the task force that helped select major public relations firms for the AKC, as board liaison to the Delegates Companion Events Committee and as Chair of the Audit Com- mittee (2013-2015). I still judge and compete and am working on my fifth OTCH with a Golden Retriever. CARL ASHBY

the last two as Vice Chairman. I currently serve on the AKC Canine Health Foundation Board of Directors and Executive Committee, am a Vice Chair of AKC Reunite and a member of the Board of Managers for AKC Link. I belong to the Carolina and Forsyth Kennel Clubs, am a founding member of the Car- olina Terrier Association and am a Life Member of the United States Kerry Blue Terrier Club (USKBTC). He currently serves as Cluster Chair for the Carolina Cluster. I have served on three Delegate committees including the Delegate Advocacy and Advancement Committee and most recently the All Breed Club Committee and the Perspectives Committee. JAMES DOK

I love the American Kennel Club because of my love for pure- bred dogs! My first dog, as a young boy, was an AKC Registered Cock- er Spaniel, followed by an AKC Registered Dachshund. The challenges are surround- ing us daily. How do we maintain the original integrity of our sport while at the same time grow the awareness of an important con-

stituency the American public that AKC is good, our base is ever-expanding and Family-friendly? In the past, we could live on AKC Registrations and dog shows alone. Those days are gone today and for our future. Fifteen years ago, AKC rec- ognized that problem and it was systemic. Today, with knowledgeable Individuals, along with the New York State Not-for-Profit Corporation, AKC has maneu- vered itself legally into a business platform, along with our sport platform, to effectively secure investments, (LLC’s,) that mimics aspects comfortable/compatible with our origi- nal intent. These investments over time will generate income that "sustains and supports" our growth, and AKC Mission Statement. To fathom this concept is critical to our contin- ued growth, supportive of our core interest and healthy for the American Kennel Club. It might surprise many "close to AKC," that almost 82% of our income is derived from within our business platform growth team’s initiatives. Yes, my love is for all purebred dogs, but I am pragmatic enough to value the importance of all things all dogs! My appointed Board responsibilities these past four years include: board appointed liaison to delegate advocacy and advocacy committee; herding, earthdog and coursing events committee; all-breed clubs committee and bylaws commit- tee. I am an AKC Pension Committee member and have been since March 2015, on the Judges Review Committee as of October 1st, 2015 and AKC Detection Dog Imitative since June 1st, 2015. I have been an AKC/PAC Board Member since January 1st, 2015 and have been an AKC/PAC Chairman since January 1st, 2016. My qualifications include: AKC/Eukanuba Invitational Championship (designated ring steward 15 years since incep- tion of the venue), AKC delegate for Gig Harbor Kennel Club

I love the American Kennel Club because it is the only orga- nization 100% committed to all aspects of responsible dog ownership including health care, preservation of purpose-bred dogs and promotion of respon- sible dog ownership. No organiza- tion does as much or deserves our support more than the American Kennel Club!

I am the President of Ann Crittenden, Inc. which I grew to a chain of 14 retail stores. I retired from AT&T as President, AT&T Custom Manufacturing Services a $200 business unit of AT&T, which I founded. I hold a BS in Electrical Engineer- ing, a Masters in Business Administration and a certification in Strategic Planning from MIT. My wife, Jaimie, and I became involved with purebred dogs soon after graduating from college first in obedience and then conformation. Our first Kerry Blue Terrier litter pro- duced an owner-handled multiple Best in Show dog. Since then we have had a limited breeding program under the Blu- jac prefix including two additional Best in Show Kerry Blues. We continue an active breeding program and owner handle our Kerry Blue Terriers at major shows around the country. In addition to my many civic leadership roles, I have been very active in dog organizations, most recently completed eight years of service on the AKC Board of Directors with

from September, 2008 to present and Santa Clara Valley Ken- nel Club from September, 1993 to September, 2008. I have been on the All Breed Club Committee and the Strategic Planning Committee for three years, as well as the Delegate Advocacy and Advancement Committee for the past elev- en years. I’m on the Ad Hoc Committee Chairman “Judges Affairs Committee” presently. I have been serving as the AKC Trial Board Officer continuously since 1998 and was appoint- ed by the AKC Board of Directors. I am a chairman for reduc- tion of delegates meeting and a member of “Future Nature of the Delegate Body” Committee for the past three years. I’m also an AKC Breeder of Merit and an AKC Humane Fund founding member. I’m a member of the Basset Hound Club of America since 1980; I have been the President, Parliamentarian, on the Board of Directors, a Nationals Coordinator, Show Chairman and Futurity Chairman and have served on the Bylaws Committee. I have also been a member of the Beagle Club of America, English Setter Association of America and the Dachshund Club of America. I was also the founding President of the Greater San Diego Basset Hound Club and a member of the Northern California Basset Hound Club and Blossom Valley Beagle Club. Additional affiliations I have relating to pure bred dogs include being an AKC licensed judge, being President for four year of the California Federation of Dog Clubs and represent- ed the AKC in the California Coalition of Companion Animal Activists and was designated to replace Wayne Cavanaugh and John Mandeville following their first two years. I’ve attended the Kellogg West Conference at Pomona, California in 1993 and the AKC Institute on the Sporting Breeds in San Jose, California in 1998. I’m a member of the Dog Judges Association, American Dog Judges Association and the Senior Conformation Dog Judges Association. I’ve held numerous offices including President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Treasurer, Director, Par- liamentarian, Committee Chairman, Bylaws, All Breed and Breed Specific Show Chairman, BHCA National Coordinator

in 2009 and periphery areas of responsibility to numerous to record. I have had experience with group presentations and can comfortably address issues before the dog fancy includ- ing: responsible dog breeding, anti-dog legislation, litigation risks in management and breed specific issues. I also am a des- ignated judge’s mentor, since 1985, and am active on bench hearing committees for the Santa Clara Valley Kennel Club. JAN RICHIE GLADSTONE DELEGATE, RICHMOND DOG FANCIERS CLUB SINCE 2002

I love the AKC because I believe in purebred dogs, the dedicated AKC breeders responsible for true to purpose purebred dogs, the devoted AKC parent clubs which protect our breed standards and nurture our breeders and the committed AKC All Breed, Agility and Obedience and Dog Training Clubs which tirelessly toil to pres- ent events to showcase our dogs’

unique talents. I love the AKC because I believe in our family of AKC exhibitors who show their passion for dogs in compe- tition in conformation, companion and performance events, fair weather or foul, across the country. I love the AKC because I believe in AKC / CHF’s mission to improve the quality of life for dogs and humans, AKC/ Reunite’s aid to animals in natural disasters and animal recov- ery and the AKC Humane Fund’s goal to promote responsible dog ownership. I am an active AKC Breeder of Merit and exhibitor of Smooth Fox Terriers and Cardigan Welsh Corgis. A Champion Leonberger and a hopeful future Champion English Setter, co-owned with Rebecca Yuhasz make up the balance of my current household. I owned the Number One Smooth Fox Terrier in 2000. My latest litter was whelped October 16, with many wonderful dogs and bitches in the interim. I judge a number of Terriers and one Toy breed. I serve as President of the Fox Terrier Club of Maryland. I am a Mem- ber of the Board of my parent club, the American Fox Terrier Club, a Parent Club Mentor and Current Chair of our Meet The Breeds Booth. My initiative for the AFTC is Youth Out- reach and New Member Mentoring and Recruitment. I am Chief Ring Steward and a Member of the Board of Governors for the Bryn Mawr Kennel Club. I am also a Mem- ber of Morris&Essex Kennel Club. I am a past Show Chair, Board Member and Secretary for the Greater Naples Dog Club, where I was active when living in Florida, presently my part-time home and a former AKC Trial Board Chair, familiar with Event Committee appeals and the situations which pro- voke them in our current dog world. I now serve on the AKC Bylaws Committee.
