A M E S S A G E F R OM T H E P U B L I S H E R WE THE (DOG) PEOPLE

T oday, “We the Dog People” are more connected than we have ever been. SHOWSIGHT has enjoyed no fewer than 150,000 visitors on its website (www.showsightmagazine.com) every single month for the past six months. This is due to the heavy invest- ments we’ve made, and we are now able to reach out to just about every single dog show club that exists on planet earth. With that said, it is a pleasure to greet dog show people from around the world! Dear Friends, I write this message with a heavy heart. The conflicts that are cur- rently happening all over the world woke up my old wounds that I experienced as a child in the 1990’s Balkan War. Thankfully, I am strong today because of my family, friends, and all of you who accepted me into the dog show world more than a decade ago. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Because of you, SHOWSIGHT has become an international brand, and we will continue working to unite dog people around the world through our print and digital pages.

We are ALL a Community, a Worldwide Family.

Today’s SHOWSIGHT is a global organization. If the rest of the world would use us as an example, maybe the world would be a better place. We believe that if there is a member of the dog show world who is suffering, we are all suffering. We must support each other… no matter what. Remember, love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives, and they bless you, the giver. We are ALL in this together for one another and for the welfare of purebred dogs around the world.

Son, Husband, Father, and Friend,

AJ ARAPOVIC, DOG SHOW PERSON OWNER & PUBLISHER

BY LINDA AYERS TURNER KNORR

I t would take all of the big words to describe Ronald. H. Menaker. His brilliance touched every aspect of his well-rounded life, from Madison Avenue to a simple dog walk. He loved people and worked alongside them, inspiring and leading them to make monumental dreams come true. I am greatly blessed to have been a part of his circle of friends in our dog world. Shortly after their marriage, Ron brought Lorna to Greenville, South Caro- lina, where I met her for the first time. We celebrated with a champagne din- ner at the Poinsett Club. After dessert we toured downtown, introducing Lorna to my Southern city. When we reached our famous suspended Liberty Bridge, magically, fireworks lit up the sky from our baseball stadium a few blocks away. Laughingly, I told Ron and Lorna that I had perfectly timed it just for them. The evening was an “always remember” time for the three of us. The Menakers have many friends all over the globe. I asked four of his very special ones from our sport to share some of their memories of Ron. REMEMBERING RON “Ron’s passing was a profound loss for me as well as those who knew him. He was a close personal friend of mine for more than 30-plus years, whose presence in my life was a God-given gift. From humble beginnings and a difficult childhood, he rose to the top in more ways than one; a typical Horatio Alger scenario. Who begins their career in the mail- room and ends up as Managing Director and head of Corporate Services Worldwide at J.P Morgan? His business acumen was second to none, whether at J.P. Morgan or the Boardroom of the American Kennel Club. He was sought after to be on the Board of hospitals, financial institutions, and even a veterinary school. Who could forget his many years as Show Chairman of the Westminster Kennel Club? Ron was honored with membership in a number of dog clubs, including the Kennel Club Of England. His personable charm and personality, and his sense of humor, were magical. Everyone wanted to be in his company. He was the center of attention wherever he went, and one of the most remarkable storytellers you would ever meet. Dinner with Ron was not only a culinary experience but an adventure as well. I shall never forget how he conducted AKC Board Meetings as Chairman: A Master Class on how to bring everyone together with sound logic and street smarts. He was a problem-solver like no other. On many occasions, individuals in the dog world community sought his help with health issues either for themselves or a family member. He always found the physicians they needed for their loved ones. As an AKC judge, I marveled at how he ran his ring, always chatting up the exhibitors as well as their dogs so that they were relaxed. As former Chair and Board Member of the AKC Museum of the Dog, he is responsible for bringing back the Museum of the Dog to New York from St. Louis. His passion for dog art as a collector was well-known, donating several of his paintings to the museum. And who could forget those memorable Theater Benefits he created? Perhaps one of his most admirable traits was how he treated everyone he met. Whether a receptionist or royalty, his broad smile, and his warm and animated conversation, won you over. A true Humanitarian and Icon: Ron Menaker… there was only one. There will never be another.” — Lee Arnold

Lorna and Ron celebrated their new marriage with me in South Carolina at Greenville’s Poinsett Club.

By: Marty Greer, DVM, Director of Veterinary Services at Revival Animal Health FOR PREGNANT DOGS Calcium Food &

T he appropriate calcium-phosphorus balance during pregnancy and lactation is essential for the dam and her pups to have great outcomes. Dog Pregnancy Diet and Calcium Shouldyou supplement yourdam’s calciumduring pregnancy? No. A high-quality all-life stage commercial dog food will provide all the calcium and the correct calcium-phosphorus balance needed. What should you supplement during pregnancy? Folic acid and DHA help the puppy’s eye, brain, and neural tube development. Breeder’s Edge ® Oxy Mate ® is a great source of

calcium by injection and/or gel before using oxytocin. Breeder’s Edge Oral Cal Plus™ gel works quickly and is palatable, helping her contractions. If she fails to deliver a pup within 1 hour, administer oxytocin injections. Micro doses of oxytocin are typically more effective in creating effective rhythmic contractions. Too much oxytocin or starting too early can cause the uterus to spasm, causing premature placental separation and/or shrink-wrapping the pups, clearly detrimental to effective and safe delivery. Injectable calcium can be used if available. Only 10 percent calcium gluconate is labeled and safe for dogs. After delivering all the pups and placentas, you can switch her to Breeder’s Edge Oral Cal Plus Powder. Why do you recommend commercial dog food kibble?

folic acid. Otherwise, feed only a pregnancy diet. Shouldyou feedhermore duringpregnancy? Yes, after the 5th week. She typically needs a 10 percent increase in her daily food intake weekly until whelping, based on body condi- tion and the projected litter size. Upon whelp- ing, she needs her daily food intake increased from between two and four times normal for adequate lactation. What if you add calcium to her diet?

Making your own dog food is unlikely to provide the vitamin and mineral balance needed for effective canine reproduction.

The big three pet food companies have devel - oped pet food that can support reproduc- tion. Making your own dog food is unlikely to provide the vitamin and mineral balance needed for effective canine reproduction.

Raw meat diets may allow bacteria and para- sites to interfere with our dog’s good health. Grain-free diets may contain phytoestrogens that interfere with male and female reproductive processes. Whelpwise, a canine uterine contraction monitoring service, has documented that dogs fed home-made diets are more likely to have difficult births resulting in C-sections than dogs fed a commercially available and balanced diet.

By over-supplementing her calcium or feeding a diet without the correct calcium-phosphorus balance, her parathyroid glands stop telling her body to mobilize calcium from her bones and can set her up for an episode of hypocalcemia (low blood calcium), also known as eclampsia. When is calcium supplementation appropriate? At the first signs of labor, start calcium gel. Calcium is essen - tial for oxytocin to create effective, uterine contractions. Often, effective calcium supplementation can preclude the need for oxytocin injections. If she is not having successful labor patterns, supplement

LINES FROM LINDA: RONALD H. MENAKER

“Ron was a person who inspired others. He set out to transform the AKC and possessed a rare and prized gift called leadership. He had a magical quality that sets some men and women apart so that others will follow them as they conjure up visions and invite others to dreamwith them.” —Dr. Carmen Battaglia

The Menakers sought refuge from Hurricane Irma as guests of the Battaglias; Dr. Carmen Battaglia, Ron Menaker, Nancy Battaglia, and Lorna Menaker.

Ron Menaker and Lee Arnold

“Ron Menaker and I go back many years, first as exhibitors, then as AKC Board members. One might say we became friends from the first time we met. Ron was easy to like, he was positive, a good listener, and always interested in new ideas. We had many years of fun together. We judged in Mexico and all over the US. We spent hours talking about what the future might look like. I recall on the morning of 911, we were in Newark, New Jersey, at the Delegate Meeting. I was on the stage and had just begun to address the Delegate body about how we were going to launch a nationwide effort to use the talk shows on television to get the word out about the value of having a microchipped pet. At that time, I was President and CEO of Companion Animal Recovery (CAR), now called Reunite. I had only made a few remarks, when Ron came on the stage, took the mic, and announced that the twin towers had both been hit by planes. The audience was stunned, people were panicked and began to leave, the airports were shut down and rental cars were taken. Ron said he had a car and would take me and my wife, Nancy, home with him. He also invited Dennis Sprung and David Merriam to stay. After about a week, Ron drove us to a small city in the southern part of the state where we rented a car and drove home to Atlanta. In September of 2017, a massive storm was headed to the east coast of Florida. Officials asked everyone to leave. Most Floridians came to Georgia, and within a few hours all the hotels were filled. Ron and Lorna only found one that had a room, but they would not take people with pets. I invited Ron and Lorna to come with their dogs and stay with us. It rained most of the week, but our dogs and theirs loved

playing together in the mud. We spent the days talking about breeds, AKC, and how to encourage young people to get a dog and enjoy AKC. “That’s Ron.” This became a phrase you would often hear when someone talked about Ron and his ideas. It quickly became the saying. He used to tell me to take the AKC Annual Reports on my trips and give them to people who can help us. That was Ron, always looking for ways to make AKC a better place. Ron was a person who inspired others. He set out to transform the AKC and possessed a rare and prized gift called leadership. He had a magical quality that sets some men and women apart so that others will follow them as they conjure up visions and invite others to dream with them. I always thought that it was his unique understanding of leadership that coincided with his dream for a better world with pure- bred dogs that made the AKC better during his time as chairman. No one could more eloquently summon ideas about a higher pur- pose or bring forth the majesty of leadership and make it glow better than Ron, who often referred to his own position as a board member and CEO as the guy behind the scenes. I have been truly blessed to have been a friend of Ron Menaker and I am grateful that our paths crossed and that our lives touched. I shall always remember him with the deepest admiration and affection. And I will always feel honored by the journey that we traveled together in search of better ways to improve the sport and the AKC. And so, I offer my condolences to his beloved and indispensable Lorna, his children, his friends, and all of us in the American Kennel Club, an organization that he so deeply revered. I say Au Revoir, to a gifted leader, an historic CEO, and a gracious human being.” — Dr. Carmen Battaglia

RON MENAKER, FRIEND AND MENTOR “Writing about a person who meant so much to so many is not an easy task. When that person is Ron Menaker it is even more difficult. Ron was a dear friend whom I was privileged to know both profession- ally and, most importantly, personally. He meant so much to me as he did so many others. I remember so well when Ron rose to the dais at the Delegate Meet- ing on September 11, 2001 to share ‘the tower is down’ and went on to adjourn the meeting. The rest of the story is that he took several stranded delegates to his home so that they had a place to stay as they figured out how to get home. I remember the dog people with serious medical issues whom he paired with some of the best doctors in the world to assure they received the best care possible and have access to innovative treatment. People knew, no matter who they were, they could call Ron and he would help. I remember his terrific sense of humor. He had great stories and could make the ordinary hilarious. No one told a better story than Ron nor enjoyed it more. His philanthropy was legendary. He chaired many fundraisers, both inside and outside the dog world, with his generosity leading the way. The Theater Benefit held for years prior to Westminster was a not to miss event which raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for dog- related charities. His commitment to the AKC Museum of the Dog is the reason we have this incredible tribute to purebred dogs today in New York City where it is accessible to the world. Without his leader- ship, that wonderful collection would be out of view for most people. Most of all, I remember his love of dogs and his unwavering com- mitment to the sport and the American Kennel Club. Ron was a mentor to me as well as great friend. There was no greater honor than Ron asking me to serve as his Vice Chair on the AKC Board of Directors. Always one step ahead, Ron had an uncanny ability to size up a situation, find a path forward that would satisfy most, and work to get it implemented. He never gave up! I learned much from him, and I will miss not having him to share ideas and notions with to better purebred dogs. He has left this earth, but his rich legacy will live on forever. Ron… I will never forget you and the impact you had on my life.” — Carl C. Ashby

Ron and Lorna Menaker, Lee and Romana Arnold, Car- men and Nancy Battaglia, Carl and Jaimie Ashby, and I spent a wonderful weekend in the Florida Keys for the wedding of our friends, the late Steve Gladstone and Jan Ritchie Gladstone. Jan shares the following about her memories of Ron: “Malcolm Forbes is credited with the wisdom that ‘[c]ontrary to the cliche, genuinely nice guys most often finish first...’ Ron Menaker always did. I met Ron many years ago at the International Kennel Club Show. Ron was judging. I was his steward. I was impressed by his courtesy to exhibitors and his ready wit. His sheer joy in judging and his love for the fancy were infectious. I came to know Ron better over the years, first as an AKC Del- egate and later as a judge. As a Delegate, I came to value Ron’s visionary leadership and business acumen on the Board. Even more vital to the fancy, how- ever, was Ron’s sheer availability in his role as Chairman. He took phone calls on everything from club issues to medical ones. The time and kindness he devoted to members of the sport was extraordinary. Ron inspired tremendous loyalty by this selfless dedication to dogs and their people. His assistance was, in many cases, literally life-saving. As a judge, when I began traveling outside the US with my late husband, I learned that Ron was held in equally high regard outside this country. His innate goodness, intelligence, and integrity won fans around the globe. Through the years, I was fortunate as our friendship further developed. As I spent more time with Ron and Lorna, my initial impression of Ron was only reinforced. Through good times and bad, Ron was a constant. As busy as he was, even as he battled illness, Ron somehow found time for friendship, counsel, and advice. Ron has left a lasting legacy to the fancy with his service as Chair- man of the AKC Board, his work as Show Chair of the National Championship, and his work with the AKC Museum of the Dog. Ron also lives on in the hearts of the many who felt the difference his kindness made. May his memory truly be a blessing.” — Jan Ritchie Gladstone

LINES FROM LINDA: RONALD H. MENAKER

“A very special person who touched the lives of many, his presence and ability to inspire and encourage made one a better person.” — Lorna Menaker

Lorna Menaker has been by Ron’s side since their marriage in 2014, bringing her son, Alexander, and their Border Collie, “Bob.” It’s hard to miss in the pictures shown here that they were a very happy family. In a conversation I had with Lorna today, she told me these thoughts about her husband: “To Know Ron Is to Love Ron. Honestly, there are not enough adjectives to describe him, his ‘uniqueness and specialness.’ An extraordinary, distinctive gentle- man who selflessly and generously helped those in need. He would seamlessly find a way to resolve matters. He exuded great leader- ship, was an amazing mentor and a fantastic delegator. He would present you with a task and you had better complete it. ‘Talk the Talk AND Walk the Walk.’ His humbleness coexisted with his unparalleled passion, he worked diligently to accomplish giant goals that others would have found overwhelming. His endeavors ultimately culminated in well-deserved ‘ lifetime’ achievement and humanitarian awards, ranging from his ‘considerable’ contribu- tions in the Dog World through to his philanthropic work. He was a stellar visionary with outstanding business acumen. He was resilient, strong, and very fair. He was equally gentle, kind, car- ing, loving, and could always be relied upon. His intrinsic desire for reciprocal loyalty and integrity was renowned. A very special person who touched the lives of many, his presence and ability to inspire and encourage made one a better person. As I say this with all my heart, walk beside me through this life, Ron, you will always remain close, until we meet again, my sweetheart. You know you were truly loved by many and as the love of my life, you will forever be in my heart and on my mind.” — Lorna Menaker A Military Memorial Service will be held at 9:30 am on Monday, March, 21, 2022 at the South Florida V.A. Cemetery, 6501 S. State Road 7, Lake Worth, Florida 33449. Ron held a deep passion for dogs and was a dedicated advo- cate of the American Kennel Club and the AKC Museum of the Dog. PORTUGUESE WATER DOG

LINDA SOUZA LIMERICK IRISH WOLFHOUNDS

BREEDER INTERVIEW BY ALLAN REZNIK

Where did you grow up? I was born on the peninsula south of San Francisco in San Mateo, California, in 1948 and grew up in the suburban city of San Bruno, between San Mateo and San Francisco. I was the middle child of five. My father was from Richmond, Virginia, and my mother was from San Diego, California. Did you come from a doggie family? If not, how did the interest in breeding and showing purebred dogs begin? I met my future husband in high school in 1962 at the age of 14. He was 16. We mar- ried after high school graduation in 1967. He was then 20 and I was 18. We will celebrate our 55th wedding anniversary this coming April 23rd. He is my soulmate and a man of integrity and also quite a character, but in a good way. He is also a dog lover but is not interested in attending dog shows. He is my live-in dog sitter when I attend dog shows. We grew together, always sharing the same goals in life. We started out in an apartment in San Bruno and then moved to a duplex in Millbrae, the next town south. The duplex was owned by my husband’s parents and this is where my friendship blossomed with my mother-in-law, Janet Souza. The duplex had a fenced yard and I immediately wanted to get an Old English Sheepdog. I was smitten with the breed from pictures I had seen. Cliff and his mom surprised me with a puppy on my 20th birthday. Janet was a dog lover all her life, but was never allowed to have a dog until she left home. She was raised by her grand- mother in a small house in San Francisco. When she married at 18, one of their wedding gifts was $25 cash and Janet immediately started a family by running out and purchasing a Springer Spaniel puppy. We always got a kick out of that story, but it was actually a sign of things to come. Janet also had a Chihuahua, Poms, and a Miniature Poodle while she was raising her three children. Janet fell in love with AmStaffs in 1968 and purchased a dog and a bitch. This was the same year the Old English came into my life and we were

ourselves to put as few puppies as possible on the ground with the highest possible consistency of quality. I’m very proud to say that I think we were very successful in this effort. We have only produced 16 litters under our roof over these past 50 years, totaling 112 puppies with more than 50 champions... just slightly under 50% of the puppies we have put on the ground. We have bred, owned, and handled National Specialty BOB and BOS recipients, and one of our dogs sired the BOB winner at the largest IWCA National ever (close to 500 Wolfhounds entered) in 1995. Our dogs have also sired four BOS winners at IWCA Nationals. We have been award- ed Select Dog and Award of Merit at a National, and we have been awarded Best Puppy at a National. We have also won many, many BOBs at regional specialties around the country. We have campaigned many dogs to the Number One ranking in the country during the past 50 years and mentored both owners and the public about our breed while waiting all day for Group competition. We have also owner- handled three different related Wolfhound males to all-breed Bests in Show. In 2013, the AKC awarded us Hound Group Breed- ers of the Year. We were thrilled. Janet was still alive to attend Orlando with us and receive the honor, since she was the one who started it all—a night we will never forget. Janet passed in 2016 at the age of 89. We still miss her very much. In 2019, I was “knocked off my chair” at the Purina Pro Plan & Dog News Show Dogs of the Year gala dinner in New York when they announced I had won the Owner Handler of the Year Award, which is voted on by your peers—another night I will never for- get. My dear friend, Bill McFadden, was the MC that night. There was lots of ugly crying from me that night! Who were your mentors in the sport? Please elaborate on their influence. Our most significant mentor in Irish Wolfhounds was Suzanne Tierney McCombs (Destiny Irish Wolfhounds). Our very first breeding was to a handsome male who resided with her. He was sired by the 1967 IWCA National Specialty winner, Irish import Ch. Ballykelly Colin, bred by Sheelagh Seale and owned by Mrs. H. Sheppard Musson. Janet and Suzanne became the dearest of friends. Suzanne had some lovely dogs, good breeding instincts, and a fantastic eye for a wonderful dog. Many hours were spent assessing dogs and their pedigrees. We all learned so much from Suzanne, and our pedigrees became intertwined much to both of our benefits.

when I found this out years later! Janet enjoyed showing Roaree for about a year when she realized she kept going Best of Opposite with her beautiful, smaller bitch. She then decided that instead of trying to find a male to buy, she would breed her own male to show. And so it began. In 1973, Roaree produced her one and only litter of 12 puppies, free-whelped. We had no idea how lucky we were with that first delivery. To this day, every dog we have bred goes back to Roaree in one way or another. She was far from a big girl but about as perfect as we could have asked for as a foundation bitch. She was pure luck for us and lived to be eight years old, with a temperament to die for. It turns out that 1975 was a very spe- cial year for my husband and me. We were informed by my doctor in May that we had a baby coming in December. We also broke ground on the first of two houses we built in bucolic Woodside, California. Our daughter Jamie arrived at Stanford Uni- versity Hospital in December 1975 and we moved her into the first Woodside home in February 1976. She was two months old. We lived there for eight years, then moved into the second, larger home that we built in June 1984. We lived there for 13 years. We sold that house after Jamie went off to UC Berkeley, and my husband and I decid- ed to downsize and move south of San Jose into San Martin, where we resided for 24 years. We moved to Driggs, Idaho, in June of 2021. My husband fully retired in 2012 and I retired in 2008. In April 2020, because of COVID, my daughter Jamie and her husband (of 17 years), Will Bartlett, purchased a second home in Jack- son Hole, Wyoming, to get their three children out of San Francisco until they could return to the classroom. The second home in Jackson is only 35 miles from our new home in Idaho. They spend all their summers and holidays there, so we felt we wanted to spend that time near them. The children are very busy during the school year in SF, so being closer to them in Wyo- ming for summers and holidays was the best choice. We are loving our new home in Idaho (yes... even the average snowfall of 100 inches per year). The Wolfhounds think they died and went to heaven with the cold temps and snow. They hated the triple-digit heat of the California sum- mers. They exercise so much more will- ingly here. It’s the perfect place for them. And no fleas or foxtails! All during the past 50 years, we showed our Irish Wolfhounds consistently and bred our dogs infrequently. We challenged

Ch. Roaree of Limerick at eight years

all living next door to each other. Janet went to obedience classes with her AmStaff male, and the instructor convinced her to enter an obedience trial at a local all-breed show sponsored by the Santa Clara Valley Kennel Club. Naturally, I accompanied Janet to the show for moral support, no matter which way the dog was going to perform. Fortunately, the AmStaff did not embarrass her. After the obedience com- petition had ended, we drifted over to see what this thing called “conformation” was all about. The rest became history! By 1971, Janet decided she liked watch- ing the Irish Wolfhounds at the dog shows because of their calm demeanor and com- manding size. She began an extensive search for a grown bitch because she had already learned that purchasing a puppy for show came with risk and it might not turn out. Janet only wanted the Wolf- hound for companionship and the sport of showing, but had no intentions of get- ting involved with breeding. As luck would have it, Janet found an 18-month-old Irish import bitch with 10 points, including one major, owned by an attorney in Santa Rosa. His wife decided she didn’t want that “big dirty dog” in her house anymore. We were so happy he chose the wife over the dog and we got the dog, The bitch had already been registered and named by the breeder in Ireland. She was Roaree of Limerick, and Janet took possession of her at the Santa Clara Valley Kennel Club in February 1972, exactly 50 years ago. The Limerick in her registered name did not refer to an Irish kennel name but rather to her place of birth in Limerick County, Ireland. Hence, Limerick became our kennel name. We obtained her cham- pionship quickly and her second major was awarded by Desi Murphy’s uncle, John Murphy, which was a fabulous surprise
