F or all those romantic souls out there, here is a story about a Salt Lake City couple whose love story began at the Westminster Dog Show in 2006. Mutual friends, Cindy and Robin Stansell, introduced me to Gayle and Dick Denman in the spring of 2016 at our Carolina Dog Judges Study Group Seminars. We had a super turnout that week. Gayle was attending and present- ing while Dick visited with old friends and made new ones, including me. The three of us formed a fast friendship dur- ing our week together. I recently judged a Collie Specialty in beautiful Salt Lake City and one evening, Dick and Gayle took me out to dinner at their lovely Hidden Valley Country Club where I learned more about their lives. As Dick tells it, their story began on February 12, 2006 at the Westmin- ster Dog Show. Before they were dat- ing, Dick and Gayle, along with several friends, met up in New York City to spend the week together. Unlike Gayle, Dick was not known to attend Westmin- ster on an annual basis. But that year, Dick was interested in going because a mutual friend, Rick Gschwender, was judging the Herding Group. On the other hand, it was tradition for Gayle to meet up annually with close friends, Jon and Susan Cole. Gayle has many fond memories of Westminster Dog Shows and one secret that she’d like to share is that she was the one who taught Asa Mays how to dance the “Chicken Dance” at Sammy’s years ago. The week began with a night out to the theatre to see “A Woman in White”. Joining in the fun were friends Karen and Brad Child and Joyce and George Vaughn. It was at the play sitting next to Gayle that Dick felt that special spark!

The next evening, Dick invited Gayle to be his date at the Canine Health Founda- tion cocktail party. Later that evening, one of the worst snow storms hit New York City. Gayle said that it was literally snowing sideways. They were going to go to Sammy’s with friends for dinner, but that plan was cancelled due to the storm. Instead, Dick and Gayle spent the evening with friends watching the winter Olympics. Afterwards, Gayle made the first move and kissed Dick good night! When they returned to Salt Lake City they became inseparable. Six months from their first kiss they were married! Both Dick and Gayle have years of experience in dog shows, both breeding and exhibiting and later, Gayle judging. Dick first showed German Shepherds in 1953 and belonged to the Colorado Kennel Club. He went on to show Mal- tese from Dr. Vincenzo, Calvaresi’s Villa Malta Maltese, and belonged to the Old Dominion KC. After returning to Salt Lake City, Dick showed Standard Poodles from Ms. Jean Lyle, Wycliffe Kennels. In the 80s, Gayle was intro- duced to Bull Terriers and dog shows.
She quickly embraced both. After over 20 years of co-owning, breeding and showing Bull Terriers, she fell in love with a beautiful Miniature Bull Ter- rier while judging a 2004 Specialty in Australia. Years later, Gayle and Dick were gifted with a repeat breeding (Star- dom G Day Gandalf) from friends, John and Bernadette Schofield. Due to the success of Gayle and Dick’s Minia- ture Bull Terrier, CH Gandalf’s Abigail Adams, and the successful show career that Sallie Cummings, Doug and Kathy Toomey had in showing a littermate, GCH Evolutions Runs with Scissors, Gayle and Dick’s, GCH Evolution’s Woop Woop at Gandalf was recognized in the top 5 brood bitches of the year. They currently live with two Minia- ture Bull Terriers, GCH Evolution’s Woop Woop at Gandalf (“Bindi”) and CH Gandalf’s Abigail Adams (“Abi”). Now retired, Gayle has the time to con- centrate on pursuing one of her many passions, judging dogs. Gayle began judging in the late 90s and currently judges the Non-Sporting Group and is working on the Terrier Group.
Dick and Gayle like to travel and since their wedding have not been wast- ing any time. They both believe that the dog shows provide wonderful oppor- tunities to travel. Whether judging or just wanting to go, they have been to Crufts Dog Show where they purchased a beautiful Caesar Rabbitt bronze Bull Terrier bust. They have also traveled to the English Bull Terrier Trophy Show in Coventry, England. Dick chuckles about the contradiction between the “no chalking” signs posted at the Bull Terrier Trophy Show and the exhibi- tors in the “car park” wearing head to toe protective overalls while chalk- ing the Bull Terriers! Gayle’s judged in Australia a few times and on one trip they had a wonderful time with their late friend, Dr. David Harris, author and well-respected Bull Terrier breed- er/judge. They traveled onto NWS, Australia where Gayle judged a Bos- ton Specialty. In Salisbury, they were awestruck by the beauty at the Poodle Club of America. The Salisbury location enabled a side trip to Washington DC. Just outside of Boston, Gayle and Dick especially enjoyed her assignment at

the Ladies’ Dog Club where they got to know Kathi Brown better. Afterwards they toured Boston. Gayle particularly enjoyed the ferry rides in the Harbor. Dick loves it when Gayle judges in Indo, California and Phoenix, Arizona in Jan- uary and February! This past year they rented houses, packed up the dogs and stayed the month of January in Palm Springs and February in Scottsdale. Gayle missed out on the awesome Utah skiing and snow shoeing last year, but she said they were never lonely because they had several house guests making the two months fly by. They like to travel and even if it’s not related to a dog show weekend, they still get the bug to go to new places. They went on a golfing cruise from Rome through Florence, Monte Car- lo, Barcelona, Cartagena, Lisbon that ended in Dover, England. They were delighted to have met the late Ken Ven- turi, a professional golfer and commen- tator, on-board as the celebrity guest. They also cruised from New York City through the Panama Channel ending in Los Angeles. They have also cruised from Seward, Alaska to Vancouver, BC. This cruise was on Gayle’s bucket list and they loved every minute of this trip. A Westminster College sponsored trip to London and Paris resulted in a shopping spree at Harrods where Dick bought Gayle Kentucky Derby Hats. Gayle explained that she went back to Westminster College for her Masters when she was over 50 years old and jokes that she was older than all of her professors! As Dick tells it, after having bought the hats at Harrods, they abso- lutely had to go to the Kentucky Derby. They went to the Derby the very next year, the year Blue Bell won the Ken- tucky Oaks and Big Brown won the Derby. Because Gayle’s family was from
Ireland they were delighted to have been invited by her sister to go on a hik- ing tour there. They visited Dublin and hiked in the marvelous country side including a trip to Skelling Michael and Ring of Kerry. Locally, they live within hours of several US National Parks. They recently visited Bryce Canyons and Zion National Park and enjoyed plays at the Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah. Well you already know that one of Gayle and Dick’s hobbies include con- formation, but you may not have known about barn hunt competitions. Dick says that their youngest Miniature Bull Ter- rier, Abi, is fun to watch as she literally smashes her way through the haystacks looking for the rats. She is currently in the senior competition. Their non-doggy related hobbies include golfing. They especially enjoy the 9 and Dine events at their Hidden Valley Country Club. When in town, Gayle plays on the Tuesday ladies league and, in the winter, substitutes for the Hidden Valley Country Club bowling league. Gayle enjoyed volun- teering at the LPGA US Open and for numerous Hidden Valley Country Club golf tournaments. She’s also very active with a local active seniors group, the Salt Lake City Newcomers’ Club affec- tionately referred to as the Oldies but Goodies Group. She found this social group when all of her ski buddies quit snow skiing. In the winter, the group skis at Alta Ski Resort on Thursdays and snow shoes in the mountains on Fri- days. In the warmer weather, she hikes with the group on Fridays. Through her friendships, she’s started playing Pickleball, a game she describes as very fast, social and lots of fun. One of the group’s get togethers that they both enjoy are the monthly wine par- ties where the group gathers at various homes for wine and hors d’oeuvres. They are also members of the Third Saturday Night Dance Club that meets at the beautiful Salt Lake City Country Club. Tuxedos are a must for the men. It’s not that they are accomplished in dance, it’s just that they so enjoy this evening with friends. Dick is on the Board of Trustees for the Nature Conservancy and has been very sup- portive of the local conservation efforts in Utah. Together, they are very much involved in the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve.
The Denmans continue to be dedi- cated to giving back to the sport that brought them together and provided them with so many wonderful friends and memories. They are members of the Bull Terrier Club of America, Minia- ture Bull Terrier Club of America, Gold- en State Bull Terrier Club, Santa Barbara Kennel Club, two all-breed clubs in Salt Lake City, Group IV Terrier Club of SLC and have recently formed a new club, Great Basin Non-Sporting Club of Utah. They are supporters of AKC’s Canine Health Foundation. Dick and Gayle call each other “lucky ducks” to have found love in their lives once again. The Den- mans, always together, can be found ring side. And it’s easy to see—theirs is a true LOVE STORY! My son Todd sent this to me this morning as I mourn the loss of Gregg Allman. The photo was made at the Allman Brothers farm just outside of Macon, Georgia. I owned a manufacturers rep. firm who represented US Pioneer Ste- reo; Pioneer was the “in” company of the day and the Allman Brothers did national ads for us. I had fun horseback riding with Greg that day! “Rambling Man” was at the top of the charts at the time. Funny thing— when we went there, I really didn’t know quite how important the All- man Brothers were on the world music scene. I caught on quickly as they gave me copies of everything. Their music is in my soul; Statesboro Blues is playing as I share this with you. I last saw Greg Allman here, in Greenville, two years ago and gave him a copy of this photo. God rest his soul.

AKC’S MISSION IS TO PROMOTE THE PUREBRED DOG BY PROVIDING A BLOODLINE REGISTRY AND DOG SHOWS IN WHICH TO COMPARE BREEDING STOCK, H ow times change! AKC recorded only about 225,000 registrations in 1948. That number multi- plied by ten in the 90s, indicating that the mission was succeeding. But by 2016 registrations were dismal, down to only 525,000. Interestingly, promoting educated breeding, product sales and other smart business enterprises of purebred stock proved more profitable. From only a few million dollars before the turn- of-the-century, AKC’s offers swelled to $50,000,000 in the early 90s and by 2008, over $70,000,000. In 2016, overall revenue from registration and related fees, plus products and services totaled $34.6 million. AKC’s not-for-profit tax status has been unchallenged although an accoun- tant would wonder why, when registra- tions began to shrink, the AKC opera- tions budget did not. In fact, AKC Board and Officer Salaries remained at the top scale. In retrospect the AKC board must have had a vision of increasing ser- vices and thereby increasing income.
That it has done, but many would say that the original mission (the advance- ment of the sport and breeding of pure- bred dogs) was lost. Dog shows exploded from a smat- tering of small gatherings to compare breeding stock to over 3 million events, many of which seem to focus more on the people than the dogs. Indeed, dog shows have always been a social event but today they are more about deals, careers and where sales are made. Many would agree that when the American Kennel Club shifted focus from the evaluation of breeding stock to judging how people present their dogs (from children’s classes to national owner-handled awards), the mission of the sport suffered. Ignoring its mission statement, obe- dience competition was opened to mixed breeds. AKC then sanctioned more spectator-friendly events such as agility, flyball and trick dog, etc. Fun for all, but what does having an AKC-titled mongrel have to do with AKC’s mission of preserving and promoting the pure- bred dog? The answer is “not much.”
And “breeding to the AKC Standard” is passé because the American Kennel Club now issues certificates for any- thing that looks like a pure breed of dog. For a paltry $35, you can buy your ticket to the world of AKC events and clubs! So why bother buying a real AKC purebred dog? What do these registration and com- petition exceptions mean to the future of real purebred dogs? Will AKC have to change its mission statement again? What meaning do AKC Breed Standards have in today’s show ring or breeding programs? One multi-group AKC judge has something to say about preserving the breed standards, “Show breeders must wonder if AKC really cares about that little detail because seasoned dog show exhibitors witness flagrant con- formation judging disregard or outright ignorance of the AKC standards.” Does the current AKC Board (or active judg- es) ever read or reflect on the American Kennel Club mission statement? Or is it easier to just disregard it and concen- trate on pleasing the people who can get them more assignments? What can you expect when as a dedi- cated breeder, breed ring exhibitor or puppy buyer, you want a purebred dog that looks like and acts like the breed described in the standard? Can you still count on the American Kennel Club as the gold standard for that breed? Ask your friends, club members and, most of all, ask your breeder if AKC seems to have lost its way and its mission.

Having been born into the world of dog shows, I am very fortunate to have had the upbringing I did and am thankful to both my parents for introducing me to this sport. So my bare-bones library would be: “Barron’s Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds” , because I wrote it! And because it is the best combination of coffee table book, breed book and buyer’s guide. But mostly because it’s a great book to have in a living room or waiting room to enthrall people with the beauty and wonder of purebred dogs; “AKC Complete Dog Book” , because it’s standards and breed his- tory at your fingertips; “Blackwell’s 5-Minute Veterinary Consult” , the most concise yet thorough guide to anything that ails your dog; “Born to Win!” , read the bios of the suc- cessful people in the back, realize the commitment that went into their success, compare yourself. Stop expecting some- thing for nothing; “Dog Breeder’s Guide to Successful Breed- ing and Health Management”, written by a theriogenologist for lay dog breeders, it’s comprehensive yet understandable;
“The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog”, by Anne Seranne is my “breeding bible”. – June Moore
The one book I have turned to and used over and over through the years is “The Dog Owners Home Book of Vet- erinary Medicine”, by Carlson and Giffin. Useful when you don’t live particularly near a veterinary practice. The newest edition is “Dog Owner’s Home Veterinary Handbook”, by Debra M. Eldredge, Liisa D. Carlson DVM, Delbert G. Carlson DVM, James M. Giffin MD, Beth Adelman (Editor) There are likely newer books out there but this I have used from the very first edition all down the years. – Anonymous The one book I have sent home with pups that has done the very best for helping new owners adjust to adding a pup to their families is “SuperPuppy: How to Raise the Best Dog You’ll Ever Have!”, by Peter J. “Royal Canin Practical Guide to Dog Breeding” , another that goes into breeding and whelping in greater depth; “How to Behave So Your Dog Behaves” , Sophia Yin’s book that makes raising and training a dog easy; “Congratulations! It’s a Dog!” , my book that makes raising and training a dog easy; “Control of Canine Genetic Disease” , despite the plethora of dog genetics books, most are either outdated or too com- plex (i.e. Ruvinsky and Sampson’s Genetics of the Dog or Ostrander et al’s The Dog and its Genome). Padgett’s book is a good compromise but admittedly dry reading! “Popula- tion and Evolutionary Genetics (Ayala)” , not a dog book, but an invaluable resource for understanding genetics. “Best in Show (Bengtson)” , you are a link in the chain. T he Westminster Kennel Club is pleased to announce begin- ning in 2018, the club will donate $10,000 each to honor the respective winners of the Masters Agility Championship at Westminster and the Masters Obedience Champi- onship at Westminster. Each donation will be given to the training club where each winner is a member. In addi- tion, the Best Junior Handler advanced education scholarship award will be increased from $6,000 to $10,000 in 2018. These new donations and scholar- ship increase continues Westminster's 142-year tradition of giving back to the sport of dogs. The Masters Agility Championship at Westminster, launched in 2014 and open to purebred and mixed-breed dogs, is a popular part of the Meet & Compete event held on the Saturday before the Westminster Kennel Club
Dog Show. In this competition, 330 top agility dogs from across the country compete at the Masters level of com- petition in five height divisions. Fifty competitors then advance to the finals competition to determine the overall Masters Agility Champion. In 2018, the finals competition will be televised for the fifth year on FS1. In 2016, the Masters Obedience Championship at Westminster was added to Westminster Week. This event attracts top-winning obedience trial champions (OTCH) for a unique com- petition consisting of traditional obedi- ence exercises and a freestyle element. The competition is limited to 35 dogs whom compete for the championship. If the winner of the agility or obedience championships is not a member of a dog training club the donation will be made in their honor to a dog-related charity.
Since 1934, the Westminster Kennel Club has awarded a Best Junior Handler. Each year approximately 100 young people qualify to enter the Junior Show- manship competition at Westminster. Juniors come from all across the U.S. to be judged on their dog handling skills with eight advancing to the finals com- petition held at Madison Square Garden. Since 2010 the handler winning Best Junior Handler and the second, third and fourth placements in the finals have received scholarship monies towards advanced education. Starting with the 2018 event, the Best Junior Handler will receive $10,000. The remaining place- ments will continue to receive the fol- lowing scholarship amounts; second place $5,000, third place $4,000, fourth place $3,000 and the other four finalists each receive $500. All events during Westminster Week are presented by Purina Pro Plan®.

T he American Kennel Club (AKC®), the world’s larg- est purebred dog registry and advocate for all dogs, continues its commitment to students pursuing veterinary studies with the announcement of the 2017 AKC Veteri- nary Outreach Scholarship recipients. This scholarship is designed to sup- port individuals with a background in AKC events and programs, who seek to promote animal health and medicine. A
total of $26,000 in scholarship money was awarded. Recipients of the AKC Veterinary Outreach Scholarship are: Caitlin Bowen (University of Florida), Sarah Broom (Washington State University), Jacqueline Fera (University of Pennsyl- vania), Anderson Grant (Tufts Univer- sity), Candace Hoelzel (University of Wisconsin), Olga Maderych (Univer- sity of California), Ethan McEnroe (University of California), Zong Peng (Iowa State University), Brenda Righter
(University of Florida), Susan Sperling (Cornell University), Nicole Sugai (Uni- versity of Illinois). “Each of these students has proven their dedication to the world of pure- bred dogs and balanced their busy school schedules with participation in AKC events,” said Mari-Beth O’Neill, VP of Sports Services. “We’re very proud of them all and look forward to seeing their impact on the future of veterinary medicine.”
