A M E S S A G E F R OM T H E P U B L I S H E R

FRIENDS,

Only three months of shows remain for 2021! Aren’t they going to be some of the busiest and most exciting months we’ve ever experienced? I think, yes! When I saw the list of All-Breed and Specialty Shows that are happening between now and end of the year, I was left speechless. But then I said to myself, “Oh my, here is my Pub- lisher’s Message for this month!” I think all of us are just so proud and happy to have turned this year around full-circle and made 2021 a huge success for the dog show community. Now, once again, many of us will be spending time at shows with family and friends over the holidays, reflecting on life, and looking ahead to next year. For exhibitors, the last few months of 2021 will be the most crucial. Everyone wants to finish strong before retiring their special or build momentum for 2022—including the fast-approaching Westminster. I never use my Publisher’s Message to sell advertisements, so please excuse me for men- tioning it now. If you are looking to finish the year strong, now is the time to think about your next ad. Meegan, Ryan, and myself (together with the rest of our team) will be work- ing for you around the clock. Just give us a call, send us a text message or email us. We will help you by creating memories! After all, we don’t just design ads, we work with you to create effective campaigns that help you achieve your goals. Okay… Now that I got a little sidetracked by mentioning advertising, let’s continue… There are many National Specialties remaining this year, and many spectacular all- breed shows to come, including Morris & Essex, the National Dog Show, and the AKC National Championship. I can’t forget to also mention the most impressive Terrier Group Show in the World: Montgomery County Kennel Club. Each of these celebrated events is rich in dog show history. Together with their sponsors, each of these clubs does such a phenomenal job of providing a happy and safe environment for the fancy to come together to compete and have a good time. One of the things that I appreciate most about these shows is that they work extremely hard to promote preservation purebred dog breeders (and purebred dogs in general) to the millions of people who haven’t heard about our sport or own a purebred dog. The National Dog Show is televised on Thanksgiving Day and the AKC National Championship is promoted through various media outlets over the holiday season. What a blessing for all of us. We’d like to think that our magazine has had something to do with the growth of our sport—and this is all thanks to you. As I reflect over the past 12 years since joining SHOWSIGHT , I can’t help but feel very blessed myself. I’ve been blessed to have been given the opportunity to serve you and I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by so many passionate people who just want to do well for our community. I’m also blessed by having the privilege to consider so many clients to be my good friends. This (and a vision to build a truly International Preservation Purebred Dog Channel) prompted me to purchase SHOWSIGHT from Doll-McGinnis Publica- tions in 2017. Today, I’ve never been clearer about what I want and will do; this is not just about working to protect our community, but also to grow it! And now, the first of five steps has just been completed–the launch of a BREED MAGAZINE for every single AKC Registered Breed. These digital publications will be used to help educate millions who are interested in welcoming a beautiful purebred puppy into their family as well as those who are looking to compete in AKC Conformation, Performance, and Companion Events. Please visit pages 227, 228 & 229 in this issue to read the Press Release that gives all the details on this project. Thank you to all our clients, readers, employees, and industry associates. May you all enjoy the many blessings of the coming season.

Yours Faithfully,

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To Whom It May Concern,

I enjoyed reading the article about canine dentition in the recent issue of Showsight Magazine (July 2021, Vol. 29, No. 7), written by Stephanie Hedgepath, and as a holistic doctor and chiropractor, I appreciate that these topics are being covered. I would like to comment on a small, but important, point that was not discussed in this article. On page 82, towards the end of the article, the author recommends the usage of kelp to help reduce tartar accumulation from the reaction that occurs when these supplements are ingested. While this can be helpful for some dogs with no noticeable side effects, for other dogs, this extra supplement to their diet can be a problem. Kelp is high in iodine, and for dogs that already have an excellent diet with high levels of minerals being supplied, additional iodine through these kelp or similar seaweed-based supplements may lead to potential thyroid problems. This could potentially be the case for dogs that are fed organ meats such as liver on a regular basis, since liver is a good source of iodine along with many other nutrients. Also, any owner with a dog or breed with a tendency for thyroid problems should be very careful when considering these products. One can easily read the reviews on the Internet of similar products to find this issue being mentioned by customers who learned of the problem firsthand with their dogs. I feel that when health advice is being offered, it is important to recommend caution and seek the support of a veterinarian or similar qualified healthcare professional.

I appreciate your consideration of my thoughts. If there are any questions or if additional information is needed, please feel free to contact me by email at drtimfleming@yahoo.com or by phone at 303-444-3833. Sincerely,

Timothy Fleming, D.C.

A RESPONSE

In my recent article in the July 2021 issue of Showsight on canine dentition, I mentioned that I used Organic Norwe- gian Kelp as a supplement in my own dogs’ diets for several years and that it has been a great help in keeping the tartar buildup on my Corgis’ teeth to a minimum. Showsight received a thoughtful letter to the editor concerning this state- ment from Timothy Fleming, D.C., a holistic doctor and chiropractor, who made a very good point with which I totally agree: “ While this can be helpful for some dogs with no noticeable side effects, for other dogs, this extra supplement to their diet can be a problem. ” It is always a good idea to discuss things with your veterinarian when you make a change in your dog’s diet, especially if you feed as Dr. Fleming describes above. It is always better to be safe than sorry! My thanks for Dr. Fleming from reminding me of this.

AMERICA’S DOG SHOW RETURNS TO NEW YORK CITY IN JANUARY 2022

New York, NY —Dr. Don Sturz of Brooklyn, New York, will judge Best in Show at the 146th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show presented by Purina Pro Plan® at Madison Square Garden on January 26, 2022. The superintendent of the Valley Stream 24 School District in Long Island, New

Seven Group Judges will select their picks for the Best in Show competition over two nights at Madison Square Garden. On Tuesday, Jan. 25, the following judges will select four Group winners to advance to the Best in Show competition. Mr. Eugene Blake of Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the Hound Group; Mrs. Rosalind Kramer of High Point, North Carolina, for the Toy Group; Ms. Evalyn Gregory of Louisville, Kentucky, for the Non-Sporting Group; and Mrs. Sharon Ann Redmer of Whitmore Lake, Michi- gan, for the Herding Group. On Wednesday, Jan. 26, the following judges will select the remaining three Group winners to advance to Best in Show. Dr. Elliot L. More of Deerfield, New Hampshire, for the Sporting Group; Mrs. Faye Strauss, of Kent, Washington, for the Working Group; and Mr. Richard W. Powell of Palmyra, Pennsylvania, for the Terrier Group. The Best Junior Handler award will be decided on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at Madison Square Garden by Junior Showmanship Finals Judge Mrs. Karen Mammano of Webster, New York. The eight Junior Showmanship finalists will be determined in preliminary rounds by judges Mrs. Amy Booth of Mims, Florida, and Ms. Lisa Gallizzo of Branchburg, New Jersey. The 9th Annual Masters Agility Championship at Westmin- ster on Saturday, Jan. 22, will be judged by Ms. Ronda Bermke of Greenleaf, Wisconsin, and Mr. Ben Gibbs of Kingsport, Tennessee. Mr. Christopher Cornell of Sequim, Washington, will officiate the 7th Annual Masters Obedience Championship at Westminster on Monday, Jan. 24. Pending American Kennel Club approval, the judging panel for

York, Dr. Sturz brings a lifetime of experience as a breeder, exhib- itor, and judge to the most prestigious judging assignment in the sport of purebred dogs. Anchoring Westminster Week, this iconic annual dog show has been held continuously since 1877. Dr. Sturz began participating in the sport of dogs as a child. As a highly successful Junior Handler, he exhibited in the famed Westminster Junior Showmanship competition. He was selected as a Junior Showmanship Finalist three years at Westminster, beginning with his first time entered at the age of ten. During his Junior Showmanship career, he was ranked as the number one Junior Handler in the US for three consecutive years. While growing up in the sport, Dr. Sturz trained and exhib- ited dogs in a variety of American Kennel Club events, includ- ing conformation, obedience, and field trials, earning numerous awards and titles. A longtime preservation breeder and handler, he has bred, owned, and handled All-Breed and Specialty Best in Show winners and nationally ranked dogs in Golden Retrievers, Miniature Poodles, and Pembroke Welsh Corgis. He currently serves as the delegate to the American Kennel Club for the Poodle Club of America, is a member of the Bull Terrier Club of America, and recently assisted in the revival of the Knickerbocker Bull Terrier Club. Additionally, Dr. Sturz has been an analyst for the Fox Sports telecast of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show for the past three years and a co-host for the Westminster Kennel Club Highlights Show presented by Purina Pro Plan ® for the past two years. Since 1990, Dr. Sturz has adjudicated at major dog shows around the world, in addition to judging the Sporting and Hound Groups at Westminster in 2010 and 2006. In 2020, he was voted Judge of the Year at the Purina Pro Plan® Show Dogs of the Year award ceremony. Dr. Sturz is approved to judge the Sporting and Hound Groups, several Terrier, Non-Sporting, and Herding breeds, Best in Show, and Junior Showmanship. This is his tenth judging assignment at Westminster. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the iconic dog show was held outdoors at the Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown, New York, in June 2021. It was the first time in the club’s 145-year history that the event was held outside of Manhattan. For 2022, West- minster Week returns to Manhattan starting with the Masters Agility Championship on Saturday, Jan. 22, the Masters Obedi- ence Championship on Monday, Jan. 24, and the breed compe- titions on Monday (Hound and Herding), Tuesday (Toy, Non- Sporting and Terrier) and Wednesday (Sporting and Working), Jan. 24-26 all on Pier 36. The evening Group judging will be held at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 25-26, 2022.

SHOW CHAIRS NEVER SIT TOM PINCUS CLUSTER CHAIRPERSON HOUSTON WORLD SERIES OF DOG SHOWS HOUSTON KENNEL CLUB

1. What is the name of your show/cluster? Our cluster is The Houston World Series of Dog Shows. 2. Where are your shows held? When? Our shows are held at The NRG Center in Houston, Texas. 3. Can you please provide a brief history of your club? The Houston Kennel Club was organized in the 1930s. (Unfortunately, all of our club records were lost in a fire in the 1990s.) We were among the first clubs to organize a cluster show in 1977 due to the gasoline shortages at the time. We have held a cluster show annually, except for 2020 due to COVID. 4. How are the following aspects accommodated at your show/cluster: Parking; Grooming; Bathing; Hospitality; Vendors; Public Education? Parking is managed by the facility. We have separate lots for conformation exhibitors, motor homes, vendors, and companion activities. Parking attendants direct you to the proper lot using color coded dashboard placards. We have almost 200,000 sq. ft of grooming, allowing exhibitors to reserve as much space as they need. Exercise pens are allowed in the building. The reserved grooming fees cover the cost of the electricity. We provide ample free grooming. The NRG Center is also used by the Houston Stock Show and Rodeo, so each hall has animal washes. We provide bath tubs. We normally have around 200 vendors and 50 dog rescue clubs, which we subsidize. Since this show is open to the public, we have many vendors offering product that is not specifically dog- related. We provide public education by hosting Judges’ seminars that are managed by the Dog Judges Association of America (DJAA). We also have an active Meet the Breed, with over 100 breeds participating. 5. Does your show/cluster offer the National Owner-Handled Series? Junior Showman- ship? 4-6 Month Beginner Puppy? Best Bred-By? Specialties? Supported Entries? We offer NOHS, and Best Bred-By. Our first day includes Specialties and Group shows, and we regularly have Specialties and Supported Entries at our All-Breed shows. 6. How are judging panels determined? Who stewards at your show(s)/cluster? Houston KC members offer suggestions, and the Board filters these requests based on availabil- ity and the number of Breeds/Groups the judge is allowed. We will hire breed-specific judges for Specialties or if the local Breed Club promises a certain number of entries. 7. Are Breed Seminars and Judges Education offered? Yes, organized by the DJAA. 8. How are your show(s)/cluster promoted? TV? Radio? Print Media? Social Media? Over the years, we have tried almost all promotional aspects. Social media now seems to be the cheapest and most effective. TV stations no longer have the budget to cover the show. 9. What are some of the challenges that you’ve had to face as show/cluster chair? The show runs smoothly, thanks to the Committee Heads who are all experienced and hard-working. The biggest challenge is promoting the show to the general public. 10. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, what have you and your club members learned about putting on a dog show? What, if any, are the differences from previous years and how are you planning for the future? This year, we offered only Conforma- tion judging and Judges’ Seminars. We downsized the space and rented only two of the five halls. Vendors were by invitation only, and we did not have any of our special events such as Meet the Breed, Disc Dogs, Free Style Dancing, Fly Ball, Barn Hunt, and the Mari Jon Filla Student Art Show. We looked at every opportunity to reduce our costs, since our two principal sources of income—gate revenue and booth rentals— were eliminated or reduced. I would like to thank Purina Pro Plan for their continued support of our downsized show. Next year, we plan on hosting our normal show.

BIOGRAPHY Tom Pincus attended his first All-Breed dog show in 1969. In the 1970s, he and his wife, Nancy, were active Basenji breeders and conformation competitors. The couple joined the Houston Kennel Club in 1976 and have been active members since. Tom has worked almost every aspect of the show, and has been active in The Houston World Series of Dog Shows since its inception in 1977. Tom is currently the President of the Houston KC and their delegate to the AKC.

REMEMBERING LUC BOILEAU HE ALWAYS HAD A STORY TO TELL BY LINDA AYERS TURNER KNORR When reflecting on times spent over many years with Luc Boileau, I always smile. He was always happy and gleaming, and a real gentleman every time I was around him. Luc was famous for his tales about dogs, horses, Knollwood Farms, his many travels, the thrills of Westminster, and best of all, just memories of our friends. These photos are a few of my favorites from our times together. The dog world has lost another great. Always remember Luc Boileau.

Wonder what Luc and Ruth Cooper could have been talking about over lunch at Mackinac Island?

There were lots of tales to share with these guys… Luc with John Wade and Ken Murray at Fox River Valley

Jane Forsyth and Luc had everyone laughing with their great stories at the party at my home in Greenville, South Carolina.

Luc has the attention of these greats of the dog world at the Grand Hotel at Mackinac Island. What stories this group (Andrea Glassford, Dennis Greivas, George Ward and Luc) could tell!

Luc and me, reminiscing up at Fox River Valley.

SOFT COATED WHEATEN TERRIER

CURIOUS COLLABORATORS OWNER HANDLERS CAN FORM UNUSUAL PARTNERSHIPS

ARTICLE BY DAN SAYERS

T oday’s owner handler shares every dog show experience with his or her own dog, of course. But the adventure of showing dogs is really a community affair that brings together a variety of individuals who share a common interest. Attending any show places each and every exhibitor in the company of like-minded people who care deeply about the wel- fare of purebred dogs, even if the participants have different breeds or live in different cities, states or countries. Initially, the human connections made through the dog sport can seem random, even accidental. However, the intersection of exhibitors at fairgrounds and convention centers sometimes signals the beginning of influ- ential—if unusual—partnerships. In 1983, my curiosity about showing dogs led me to join a local all-breed club. By the time I purchased my first show dog, I’d already met exhibitors with an assortment of breeds and interests. Among the first friends I made in the sport was a married couple who had experience breeding and showing several Hound and Non-Sporting breeds. At monthly meetings and handling classes, we’d strike up conversations about our dogs’ progress. I listened intently to their advice, hoping to pick up a few tips that might translate into show ring success, and they patiently answered my many questions and offered suggestions that might improve my handling. Eventually, our discussions turned to entering our pup- pies at their first show. I was shown how to fill out an entry form, dress for the ring, and pack for a weekend out of town with a dog. The couple even allowed me to hitch a ride on occasion and set up with them under the grooming tent. Without their support and guidance, I would have been lost. In fact, without their encourage- ment, I might have quit before I’d even gotten started! The connection I made with this pair of devoted dog fanciers was extremely important to me as a novice. Our informal part- nership could only have happened through membership in an all- breed club. In fact, it is only due to the kennel club and conforma- tion shows that we had anything in common, really. We came from different towns, worked in different industries, and had different points of view on many social, political, and even religious issues. Yet, despite the many differences between us, we still managed to encourage one another and provide real support when it came to our dogs. I received guidance and encouragement, and they had an extra pair of hands to help with the packing and unpacking—and repacking. Our collaboration continued until my dog earned her championship and I felt confident enough to try a few things on my own. Of course, I was only just beginning to learn about the challenges and rewards of being an owner handler. Today, I remain grateful to this couple for the kindness they extended to me as a rookie in the sport.

Dog events bring people together, sparking conversations that can lead to curious collaborations. photo by Dan Sayers
