This candid photo of Ch Briarcrest Extra Momentum, aka, Mo, depicts the result of careful, tight linebreeding to produce a dominant, desired phenotype in a breed. Mo went on to become an influential sire himself. Photo by B. Williams.

had Mr. Brown close up in her pedigree, one of the Williams’ early champion stud dogs by Sir Tomo of Glenhaven. Another top winning daughter was Ch Briarcrest Chasan Cover Girl, whelped in 1991, out of Chasan’s Lovin You O’ Thompson. Cover Girl was bred by Debbie Eskew and Sandie Roush. She garnered so many BISS wins that she retired challenge trophies that Butch or Kicker had started. In 1998, when Butch’s progeny were out in force in the show ring and win- ning big, a BHCA Regional Specialty was held in San Marcos, Texas, with breeder-judge Kitty Steidel adjudicat- ing. When it came time for the veteran bitch class, Kitty pointed to Cover Girl for first place and then made a discov- ery. Her BOB winner had been Razzle Dazzle, her WB/BOW had been Lil’ Creek’s Lindsey O’ Shalazar, and her Award of Merit had been the winner of the veteran bitch class, Cover Girl. As Kitty remarked, “…these beautiful bitches are all sired by the same dog, Ch Hiflite Briarcrest Extra Man.” In fact, Bette acknowledges that excellent quality, genetically prepotent brood bitches were always so important to Knox Williams that, “for years he and I have continued donating a wine

cooler to the winner of the Bred by Exhibitor Bitch Class at the BHCA National Specialty in recognition.” By that time Butch’s reputation as a prepotent sire had already been firmly established. Five years previously at the 1993 Basset Hound Club of America National Specialty held in California, Butch won the Stud Dog class. In the photo above from that win, Butch holds court at his place on the ramp, flanked on both sides by his offspring. The last litter whelped while Butch was still alive followed Knox’s maxim, “the sire of the sire should be the grand- sire of the dam.” Several outstanding dogs resulted from this litter of Butch bred to his granddaughter Shawnee: “Ch Briarcrest Extra Momentum (that became our house dog), Ch Briarcrest Extra Mulligan that went to Thailand where he became a top show dog and producer, and Ch Briarcrest Macho. Also, a litter sister, Briarcrest Extra Mag- ic, went to Brazil.” Through both natural and frozen semen breedings, Butch has sired 72 champions and title holders. One straw of frozen semen remains, so there might be a few more champions added to that total someday. Altogether, the Basset Hound Club of America named Butch

look-alike of his famous sire that his life- time call name became “Junior”. Junior is shown above winning a major region- al SBIS from the Veterans Class in 2011. Kicker also produced a beautiful daughter, Ch Briarcrest Shawnee that went on to produce multiple champi- ons in the famous closely linebred Bri- arcrest “M” litter. Lovely daughters remain an integral part of Butch’s legacy. One of those beauties was Ch By-U-Cal’s Razzle Daz- zle, bred by Steve and Sharon Calhoun. Razzle earned the accolade of winning the Basset Hound Club of America National Specialty twice. Razzle’s dam
