WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB DR. DONALD G. STURZ PRESIDENT
3. How has your experience as an exhibitor, judge, analyst, and co-host of Westminster’s live telecast prepared you for your newest role? Having experienced Westminster through a variety of roles has provided me with a uniquely diverse and well-rounded first-hand perspective. This will serve me well in supporting the club and the staff in the planning and preparation for each event. Westminster has had to pivot several times over the years to accommodate a variety of factors necessitat- ing changes in venues and dates. However, the club never fails to create the Westminster magic. 4. Do you have a personal Westminster memory that encapsulates what this show means to purebred dog breeders, owners, and exhibitors? We all have so many Westminster memories! The excitement of just showing a dog there is the most universal one. The flood of memories shared by breeders, owners, and exhibitors on social media is a testament to the significance the show holds within the sport. Over the years I, like many others, have memories of the joy and exhilaration of wins and the disappoint- ments of dreams unfulfilled. Personally, I never for- get the anticipatory anxiety I have experienced every year regardless of the way in which I participated. No other dog show generates the intensity of that feeling for me because of the importance Westmin- ster holds for me. 5. How do you envision the future of Westminster and the sport of dogs? I am optimistic about the future of the sport of dogs. There are certainly challenges of which we need to remain mindful, but all are surmountable through commitment and vigilance. Adapting, remaining relevant, and engaging new participants will be key for sustaining the future of the sport. Westminster will always be a beacon within the sport of dogs. It will always steadfastly champion excellence in purpose-bred dogs and celebrate the essential, unbreakable bond of love between humans and dogs.
Dr. Donald G. Sturz, WKC President (left), and David A. Helming, WKC Co-Show Chairman
SHOWSIGHT congratulates Dr. Donald G. Sturz as he begins his new position as President of Westminster Kennel Club. 1. You are following in the footsteps of Westminster’s notable leading men, includ- ing Peter Van Brunt, Chester (Chet) Collier, and William Rockefeller. How does it feel? When put in those terms, it is incredibly humbling. I have tremendous respect for the many great leaders who have been in this seat. I am com- mitted to carrying on the well-established traditions that are associated with Westminster Kennel Club. It will be important to pursue continued evolution while maintaining the essence that sets Westminster apart as the world’s premiere dog show event. 2. As a New Yorker, does the club’s iconic show hold special significance for you? I consider myself extremely fortunate to have grown up with the iconic Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show as my “local” show. I haven’t missed a single show in the past 50 years. It’s an ingrained part of me and I am extremely grateful to have had the magic of Westminster set the standard of excellence for me throughout my life.

BREEDER INTERVIEW BY ALLAN REZNIK
Where did you grow up? I am 47 years old, and I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I have lived for two years in the USA, in North Carolina. Do you come from a doggy family? If not, how did the interest in breeding and showing pure- bred dogs begin. No, I do not come from a family of dog breeders or exhibitors. This passion started natu- rally when I was very young. I had always liked dogs. I started working and learning with obedience dogs. Eventually, I got to know the world of show dogs and I am still in it today. Who were your mentors in the sport? Please elaborate on their influence. I always had good people by my side. As a professional handler of all breeds, I had Sr. Divoney Rasera. With Basset Hounds, I was lucky enough to have one of the best breeders and handlers to learn from, Sr. Jorge Algusto Dias of Park Melody Kennels. I also worked for 13 years with breeder Tatiana Pagliane of Canil Brave Basset Hounds. I showed her Bassets and it served as a great learning experience. What breeding philosophies do you adhere to? The first thing I prioritize is good health. I always try to study pedigrees and genetic issues, as well as correct breed type. How many Bassets do you currently house? Tell us about your facilities and how the dogs are maintained. Today, I live in North Carolina with my wife, Dr. Lisa Sarvas, a veterinarian and a breeder of Miniature Schnauzers. We have a beautiful kennel with great accommodations and lots of space for the dogs to play. Our priority is the physical and emotional well-being of our dogs. As a professional handler, we have our clients’ dogs here, as well as our own Basset Hounds.

BREEDER INTERVIEW: CLAUDIO DA CRUZ CONCEICAO
When did you start showing in the USA, and how did that come about? Although I was living in Brazil, I had been to the USA to show dogs of other breeds at such events as the AKC National, Potomac, and Westminster. My first Basset Hound that I showed in the USA was in 2009 at the AKC National Championship/Eukanuba Cup. Who were/are some of your most significant dogs, both in the whelping box and in the show ring? I have been very attached and hugely dedicated to the dogs I showed. I can highlight a list of dogs that stand out a lot, and name a few Bas- set Hounds in particular, but I respect everything all my other Bassets have done. I’ve been living with Bassets for more than 20 years now. BREEDER INTERVIEW: CLAUDIO DA CRUZ CONCEICAO
Please comment positively on your breed’s present condition and what trends might bear watching. I respect the many breeders and handlers who are involved in the Basset Hound breed. It is not easy to produce special Bassets all the time. There is no such thing as a perfect Basset Hound, and there never will be, but it’s important to look at the whole dog. I am very fond of the following comments made by a great judge, and try to follow the philosophy expressed: “Any fool can discover a dog’s faults; it takes a connoisseur to appreciate its virtues. The judge mentality that can really help a breed progress is all positive, having the ability and desire to reward dogs for their virtues while keeping their flaws in perspective. By recognizing dogs with exceptional qualities, judges can contribute to the creation of a breed. Cursing an excellent dog based on a minor flaw is just throwing out the baby with the bath water.” In the words of the great judge Beatrice Godsol, often quoted by another great judge, Frank Sabella: “Even the great dogs have faults; they just carry them better.” One point that does worry me a lot is that I see too few people from the younger generations stepping up to become the breeders and handlers of the future. We need those who love the Basset Hound to also want to breed and show. Where do you see yourself in the next decade or two? Now that I am focused on raising my own Basset Hounds, I know the type I want and the kennels I admire. I want to work with their dogs for my breeding program. It’s not an easy mission, but I am always working to try to make beautiful champions.
Finally, tell us a little about Claudio outside of dogs… your occu- pation, your hobbies. In addition to the dogs, I have a Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, and have achieved some victories in the martial arts, my favorite hobby. I am always studying, dedicating myself to the canine world, and looking for opinions from important people in our sport. I don’t think anyone does anything alone. I learn from my wife, Dr. Lisa Sarvas, a veterinarian and Miniature Schnauzer breeder, every day. Playing with and enjoying my dogs makes me feel very happy. Thank you for the opportunity to talk about my passion for Basset Hounds.

I have always found international judging assignments to be very enjoyable and educational. They offer the unique opportunity to see some unique breeds that may be native to that country as well as some of the differences in various breeds in that area of the world. Due to COVID, I had not been outside the United States for some time, so I was excited when the invitation came from the Korean Kennel Club to judge at their 2023 Korean Kennel Club Classic Dog Show 2023 to be held in Seoul South Korea. KOREAN KENNEL CLUB Traveling to various countries can be confusing, with the various entry require- ments of each country. In the past, your passport was sufficient for entry into South Korea. However, since the last time I was there, they have added a Q-code require- ment for COVID clearance as well as a K-ETA application to enter. I thought that I had completed the requirements, but when I arrived for my flight from Knoxville to Detroit, and then on to Seoul, I was notified there was an issue that I needed to cor- rect. Since I could not get the issue corrected in time, my flight was delayed by one full day so that I could correct it and get the K-ETA approved for my flights. After the 16-hour flight from Detroit to Incheon Airport in South Korea, I was met by Harley Wookhee Choi who would serve as my interpreter as well as my trans- portation person during my visit. Miss Choi, who is also a KKC-approved judge, had lived and studied in Arizona, so it was a joy to have someone who is so fluent in English. Communication can often be the biggest obstacle when in a foreign country, but Miss Choi made it a great experience. My accommodations were first-class and I was looking forward to my assignment on Sunday. The Korean Kennel Club owns its facility, which is very nice, well-lit, clean, and very comfortable, especially since it was a very cold February day. I will say that the entry was excellent, with a great group of dogs. In my opinion, it was the highest overall quality I have seen in South Korea during my three assignments there through the years. My Best Baby Puppy in Show was a very lovely Bichon Frise that has a very bright future ahead. For Best Puppy in Show, I chose a class bitch Samoyed that was a wonderful representation of the breed and would also be my Reserve Best in Show in the regular Group and Best in Show ring. My overall Best in Show was a fantastic Miniature Poodle bitch that I am sure could compete on any level in any country.

Another nice surprise for me was getting to visit Jay Kim and meeting his wife and young son, whose American name is Frank Murphy in recognition of Jay’s long-term relationship with Frank as an assistant and for his genuine love for his mentor. Unfortu- nately, Jay was not entered, as the family had just dealt with the tragic loss of Jay’s mother-in-law in the weeks before the show. I understand that Jay had been campaigning one of the country’s top dogs, a German Wirehaired Pointer, that had enjoyed a successful show career. The one noticeable difference in this assignment vs. those I have judged in the past was that the number of dogs exhibited was higher in the smaller-sized breeds. I am told that it is very difficult for people who live in the city to keep many of the larger breeds, and therefore, the Toy and smaller- to mid-sized breeds have become more popular. South Korea, like some other countries, has two governing kennel club bodies. I was judging for the Korean Kennel Club, although there is also the Korean Kennel Federation which is FCI affiliated. My understanding is that both clubs have been around for well over thirty years, and exhibitors in both organizations often import dogs from our American kennels. While enjoying dinner following the show, I was told that the biggest and most frustrating obstacle for the Korean Kennel Club was that the AKC has refused to acknowledge and regis- ter dogs from their registry, telling them they only recognize one kennel club body per country. This, they say, has resticted them from working with more American breeders to import and export dogs to improve their programs. They say that, over the years, they have had many judges (as well as AKC board members) visit and judge their shows, but they have been unable to get recognition in this area. It is very difficult to understand why in this day and age, with all the technology and DNA testing available, this issue cannot be resolved. Here in the US, the AKC has cross-registered dogs from numerous American Stud Books. Also, the NGKC and the China Kennel Union are both able to register with the AKC. In China, the NGKC, which was founded with help from the AKC, requires DNA testing before registration, while the China Kennel Union, an FCI affiliate, does not require the DNA. It would seem to me that if both clubs are allowed AKC registration, the Korean Kennel Club should also be recognized. The KKC is well over 35 years old and has a good track record. If we are truly going to see the purebred dog world expand, we need to be more open-minded to differences that might exist politically in various countries. We need to be all about breeding and improving the health and wel- fare of all dog breeds in the world. Many countries do not have the history of the KKC, as many clubs have been added since the fall of the old Soviet Union, yet clubs from many of those countries, including Russia, are allowed to register with AKC. (Note: Due to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, those privileges have been suspended for the time being.)

How Clean is Your Whelping Pen?
B reeding dogs is an exciting and rewarding experience, but it comes with its challenges. One of the breeder’s biggest concerns is maintaining the health of the mother and her puppies even before they are born. As the whelping box is their nursery, it is crucial to keep that area hygienically clean and healthy. We recently asked some breeders what their greatest challenges were in maintaining a sanitary whelping environment and these are their top 5 concerns: INFECTION CONTROL Infection control is one of the most significant challenges breeders face in maintaining the cleanliness of their whelping box. Puppies are born with a weak immune system, which makes them more susceptible to infections. Therefore, breeders need to take extra care to prevent the spread of infections in the whelping box. One of the ways to prevent infections is to maintain proper hygiene in the whelping box. Breeders need to clean and disinfect the whelping box daily to pre- vent the buildup of bacteria and viruses. Not only should they wash their hands thoroughly before handling the puppies, but they also need to ensure the cleanli- ness of any visitors to avoid transmitting any germs to the growing puppies. There isn’t a breeder out there who doesn’t worry about fast spreading diseases like the parvo virus. WASTE MANAGEMENT Waste management is another significant challenge breeders face in maintain- ing the cleanliness of their whelping box. Puppies are cute but produce a lot of poop, which can lead to an unsanitary environment. Breeders need to ensure that they clean up any waste promptly and dispose of it properly. Breeders should also use appropriate bedding material that is absorbent and easy to clean. This will help to prevent the buildup of waste and reduce the risk of infection. Keeping poop waste out of the whelping box is a top priority. There are many options avail- able including self-cleaning ones. ODOR CONTROL
PROPER VENTILATION Proper ventilation is essential for maintaining the clean- liness of the whelping box. Poor ventilation can lead to a buildup of harmful gasses and airborne pathogens, which can cause respiratory issues in the mother and her puppies. Breeders should ensure that there is enough fresh air cir- culation in the whelping box. They should also avoid using harsh chemicals or cleaners in the whelping box, as these can irritate the puppies’ respiratory systems. TEMPERATURE CONTROL Temperature control is another challenge breeders face in maintaining the cleanliness of the whelping box. The ideal temperature for a whelping box is around 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Breeders can use a heat lamp or heating pad to maintain the desired temperature. However, they should be careful not to overheat the box, as this can lead to heat stress and dehydration in the puppies. Breeders should also ensure that the bedding material is kept clean and dry. Wet bedding can lead to the buildup of harmful bacteria and mold, which can be harmful to the puppies’ health. By taking proactive steps to address these challenges, breeders can provide a safe and healthy environment for their puppies to grow and thrive.
Odor control is another challenge breed- ers face in maintaining the cleanliness of their whelping box. Puppies’ constant pooping can lead to a foul odor in the home environment. This can be unpleasant for both the puppies and the breeder and can raise some eyebrows if potential buyers come by to see and socialize with the litter. To control odor, breeders need to regularly clean and disinfect the whelping box. Odor-neutralizing products, such as baking soda, can help absorb any unpleasant odors.

“I DON’T HAVE A VOTE ON THE MATTER OF RECOGNIZING THE KOREAN KENNEL CLUB, BUT IF I DID, I CAN HONESTLY SAY THE QUALITY OF THEIR DOGS IS ON PAR WITH EVERYONE ELSE.”
It should also be noted that one only needs to look at the growth of new breeds being added by the AKC to the Foundation Stock Service and Miscellaneous Class to see that each country also has native breeds that we in the US rarely see. If we are going to be add- ing them, we need to have access to the best that these breeds have to offer. Limiting which registry is eligible may be counter-productive. I don’t have a vote on the matter of recog- nizing the Korean Kennel Club, but if I did, I can honestly say the quality of their dogs is on
par with everyone else. BARKARITAVILLE
Last month’s issue of SHOWSIGHT feartured numerous photos from the most recent Medina Kennel Club “Barkaritaville” show. I was again fortunate to be called in to cover substantial overloads, as they drew huge entries for their annual two-day event. The festive nature of this show is what makes it so enjoyable for both judges and exhibitors. The island attire theme in March was a fun idea and its popularity continues to grow. I commented that, since the majority of the exhibitors try to get into the theme, the judges should refuse entry to the “traditionalists” in their coats and ties. Sometimes we all need to just relax, let our hair down, and just have fun. That’s it, for now. Have a great spring!

Q ualities of being a great encourager include possessing a great heart for people, having an empathetic ear, an eye for potential, being a con- sistent source of hope, and setting a positive and inspiring example. Dennis McCoy lived the life of a great encourager. Dog Show Judges are afforded many opportunities to reflect great credit on the American Kennel Club and its many activities. Dennis McCoy was an example of everything good about our sport! The greatness he achieved is legendary. After speaking with Mari-Beth O’Neill and learning about Dennis McCoy’s passing, I phoned my friend Jeanette Stribling to share the sad news. Jeanette is just one example of a newcomer whose life has been impacted by AKC Judge Den- nis McCoy. Here’s what she reiterated to me: “After acquiring my first show dog, a Boston Terrier, I joined the Greenville Kennel Club, enrolled in their Show and Go Training Classes, and started practic- ing to get ready for the ring. Being a novice was an awkward experience, to say the least. It made me question whether or not exhibiting in conformation was for me.

After I left the ring at my first show, Judge Dennis McCoy came up to me with lots of words of encouragement. He also gave me tips for showing the next day. He boosted my confidence tremendously. My little Boston and I came back the next day and picked up our very first points under Judge Randy Gar- ren. There is no doubt in my mind that Judge Dennis McCoy is the reason I continued to exhibit and enjoy having success in the ring.” Jeanette Stribling was elected President of the Greenville Kennel Club in 2018. During her tenure, club membership has doubled. She has received the club’s Mem- ber of the Year Award, and in 2020, Jeanette was the recipient of the prestigious AKC Sportsmanship Award. Thanks to Dennis McCoy’s encourage- ment there are many more enthusiastic sup- porters of American Kennel Club activities all around the globe. Let each one of us ask ourselves what we’re doing to inspire the next generation. Take time to make a difference!

ACCOLADES FOR DIEGO GARCIA AKC RHP HANDLER OF THE YEAR

“It’s not the will to win that matters. Everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters.” —Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant
D iego Garcia was actually born into the dog world in his native country of Argentina, as his parents were Boxer breeders long before he came along. As a young boy, his passion was to enter the show ring himself. He dreamed about it, reading dog magazines every night. His favorite was the BOXER REVIEW .
By age 12, Diego secured his first client who allowed him to show their beautiful Boxer bitch. He fondly recalls his mother taking him shopping for a new pair of shoes to wear for the dog show. When Judge Betty Leininger traveled to Argentina to judge a Boxer Specialty, she observed the talents of the then 19-year-old Diego in the ring and was quite impressed. After the show, she asked Diego if she could speak with his father. The young man’s world was about to change.

Mr. Garcia secured a ticket to the United States for Diego to begin working for Michael Shephard in Texas. After spending six months there, he dreamed that one day America would become his home. At age 27, with only a suitcase, Diego returned to the United States. He had the “will!” Now he was ready to “prepare.” The handlers’ methods of show- ing in Argentina and in our country were quite different. Here, we run slower and use more gentle techniques in handling our dogs. Diego had to slow down, change his posture, and basically rethink his handling techniques. Diego shared with me, “I remember when I was in the same ring with James Moses, he kept talking to his dog and that was very impressive! I wanted to be one who would show with passion and dignity and good sportsmanship.” America is truly the land of opportunity, and United States Citi- zen Diego Garcia is proof that here dreams come true! He is now rec- ognized as one of the top Professional Handlers in this country. His handsome looks, big smile, and charming personality have afforded Diego and his beautiful wife, Eve, a world of new friends, success, and a new hometown in Lillington, North Carolina. Congratulations to Diego Garcia for being selected as the AKC Registered Handlers Program’s Handler of the Year for 2022. He was presented the award by American Kennel Club Vice President, Judg- ing Operations, Timothy Thomas during the AKC National Champi- onship Show in Orlando, Florida. Other members of the team present were AKC Field Coordinators Larry Cornelius, Mark Desrosiers, and Mary Dukes.
