NEDERLANDSE KOOIKERHONDJE

A M E S S A G E F R OM T H E P U B L I S H E R DEAR FRIENDS,

T he show year is now in full swing. We have already had quite a number of record- breaking shows this year and, by the sound of it, this will be the norm for the year. These shows haven’t just brought our current dog show people more together… they have grown our community by large numbers. Staying at home and being more online has given us all a chance to introduce the sport of dog shows to millions of people outside our community. Due to the work we’ve all been doing, we are seeing many new faces at the showgrounds. This is amazing for us to see as, for a while, our numbers had been less and less. For meeting this challenge, everyone deserves a thank you from the AKC and the Parent Clubs, from Breeders and Exhibitors, and from Media Channels, including the dog show magazines. Let’s continue this great work for the future of our community. As the past couple of years were extremely tough for me to attend many shows due to taking care of my unwell father and having young children, I will make up for it—and more—this year. This year, I am excited to attend more National Specialties than ever, alongside All-Breed Shows, to connect face-to-face with Parent Club Officers and Breeders, and all who have recent- ly joined their clubs. This is how I will learn the true needs of each breed and make sure that all of us at SHOWSIGHT are concentrating on these needs throughout 2022. I am positive that many of you will have great ideas that will help the dog show community continue its growth. But before we put them into action, we will conduct interviews with many other dog show figures before making the final decisions as to what will be the best ways for us to achieve our common goals. On our end, we have kept everything we have been doing in print while investing five times more than we ever have in the past on our digital presence. Due to this focus, we are enjoying a steady stream of 15,000-25,000 visitors on www.showsightmagazine.com per day. We have been actively working with at least 100 individuals or breed clubs on educational articles and inter- views, and more than half of these are printed in each issue and all are on our website and social media pages such as Facebook and Instagram. Our process is very simple; reach new people with educational content, introduce them to a breed, steer them towards preservation purebred dog breeders, and have the breeder do the rest, which is hopefully not just to sell them a quality puppy but to ask them to show the puppy in conformation or compete in any of the AKC sanctioned performance events. While SHOWSIGHT is sent to all AKC Judges and distributed at dog shows, and digital editions are emailed to over 40,000 Subscribers, we are spending more than a quarter of our time each month promoting preservation purebred dog breeders. This will not change, as the majority of preservation breeders are not online, and many who are seem to be getting a lot of spam calls. I would like to thank all of the Parent Clubs and Breeders who are spending countless hours with us so that we can make sure the right content and the right groups are targeted. Now that we have launched an individual breed magazine for each AKC recognized breed, our success rate at retaining visitors has more than quadrupled. And a few more exciting things are in-the- works… so we will be speaking of these once they are launched. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any ideas that you might have, and feel free to submit educational articles and stories to editorial@showsightmagazine.com . Once your editorial has been received, we will reach out to you. We don’t publish any news or articles before replying and speaking with the author. Please continue visiting our website to stay up-to-date. We post new editorial daily, with breaking news and content in our breed-specific magazines. Looking forward to seeing y’all at a dog show.

Best Regards,

AJ ARAPOVIC, OWNER & PUBLISHER

WEST HIGHLAND WHITE TERRIER

RICHARD YENCHESKY DEL REY XOLOITZCUINTLI BREEDER INTERVIEW BY ALLAN REZNIK

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Wisconsin and I attended my first dog show when I was 15. I can still remember walking into the frenetic energy and the hustle and bustle of the Brown County Expo Center. Do you come from a doggy family? And if not, how did the interest in breeding and showing purebred dogs begin? My first show dog was an Airedale Terrier that joined our family a few months after my first dog show visit, and I wish that I had gotten more involved at that time, but life had other plans. I started exhibiting and breeding dogs after I finished graduate school in Miami when I met Marsha Banks. My first Chinese Cresteds came home with me in 2000. I was involved with Chinese Cresteds and had several litters that produced a dozen champions under the POP prefix. In 2009, I got my first Xolo, and that would change my path in dogs to date. Once I had a Xolo, there was no turning back. I knew that this was the breed for me, so I put my time, energy, passion, and finances into them. Who were your mentors in the sport? Please elaborate on their influence. I was fortunate to meet some great people in dogs over the past twenty-some years and they all contributed something to the success of my breeding program in one way or another. This list of mentors/contributors includes Gretchen Hofheins, Lou Ann King, Patty Hoover, Barbara Griffin, Susan Cassem, Frank Baylis, Florence Brown, Michael Sauve, Deb Schindle, Marco Hernandez, Diane Baker, Connie Dubois, Cindi Bossart, Lisbeth and Malin Kallunki, and Joe Joly. I am thrilled to currently have people in my life who are a huge part of the Del Rey Xolos’ success in the show ring and whelping box, including my dog partner, Erika Lanasa, and Robyn Lauck, Sue and Tony DiGior- no, Kris Horton, Katie McKewan, and Teresa Vila. I am looking forward to working in collaboration with Miguel Alonso and Silvia Tojo from Mexico in the coming years to secure healthy and sound dogs, temperamentally and physically.

‘Roxom’ winning Group 1 at Shawnee KC.

‘Roxom’ competing in the Group at Westminster.

The Del Rey Xolos are widely known, highly successful and well respected. What breeding philosophies do you adhere to? I met Sue Cassem of Ryal Greyhounds more than 20 years ago and she talked about starting with the very best in a breeding pro- gram and building from there, because you will never achieve the best by beginning with mediocre breeding stock. So, I did just that when it came time to assemble a group of dogs for my Xolo breed- ing program. Starting with the dogs that I imported from Mexico and Sweden was the foundation for the Del Rey Xoloitzcuintli breeding program. Lou Ann King of Loteki Papillons makes the analogy that breeding dogs is like a tapestry, and that is one of the best pieces of advice that I received. Being a visual person, it made a big impact on me. It made me really think about linebreeding as being an art. I then began doing the reading and research, and studying the actual numbers to back it up. Another sound piece of advice from Lou Ann was, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.” Drawing your hard lines as to what is worth working with and what isn’t is an important part of going forward. Person- ally, traits such as coat/skin color, coat length and texture, and size variation are areas that I will work with, whereas bad tempera- ments and undershot bites are deal breakers for me. I would much rather have a dog with a good temperament than a dark eye. I don’t agree with a statement that I have heard regularly about bad tem- peraments being excused in a “primitive breed.” I take great pride in the Del Rey Xolos being healthy dogs of sound mind and body. I am a huge proponent of health testing and DNA testing for this breed. The typical statements made about Xolos being “a healthy” breed without any health issues are untrue. All breeds have some health-related problems. So, testing early and staying on top of it will only help the breed in what is still an early stage of

recognition in AKC. I am proud to say that nearly 20 percent of the Xolos listed in the OFA database are Xolos that I have owned, bred, co-owned and/or have been affiliated with in some regard. Using DNA testing to know what we are working with is important to manage genetic issues. Embark has been an incredible tool, and a large percentage of their database for Xoloitzcuintli is reliant on the Del Rey Xolos for their data. How many Xolos do you typically house? Tell us about your current facilities and how the dogs are maintained. I recently moved from South Florida to Ocala, Florida, to have a more appropriate “dog house” so that the dogs would have the space I needed for them. I have several large yards, to accommo- date their physical needs, and a specially outfitted dog room. I am currently housing between six and eight Xolos, and the dogs are kept as housepets, with puppies born and raised in the house. This breed really thrives as a companion and housedog and not as a ken- nel dog, so I do what is best for the dogs. W ho were/are some of your most significant dogs, both in the whelping box and in the show ring? MBIS Ch. Bayshore’s Mole was my first Xolo; a great dog and an ambassador for the breed, which led him to becoming the first Group-placing AKC Xolo and the second all-breed Best in Show- winning Xolo. “Mole” set the bar high for my future in the breed. I looked outside the country for foundation stock to establish my own kennel. That move was outside my comfort zone, but that single action was the greatest asset to take me to where my dogs are today. That adventure and exploration paid off and I was fortunate to have imported some amazing dogs from Mexico and Sweden to start my breeding program: GCH Fullibus Aquia DOD; AKC GCH, SE CH, FI CH, DK CH, Nord CH El Huasteco Arena SOM; Ch. Luchadora Hernandez DOD; and AKC CH, SE CH Fullibus Mr Grey SOD. These four foundation dogs have been the largest contributors to my breeding program within the first and second generations. Multiple BIS GCHG Roxom Del Rey is the most well-known Del Rey dog. He is co-owned with Erika Lanasa who handled him to his multiple Bests in Show and award-winning record. He is also co-owned with co-breeder Cindi Bossart, and was co-bred with Diane Baker. “Roxom” was Number 1 Xolo all-systems in 2017 and 2018 as well as going Best of Breed at Westminster in 2018 and 2019. Roxom is a Sire of Merit and the father to the current Number 1 Xolo all-systems, GCHB Sonadora Del Rey.

Mescalero Del Rey

“My goal is to leave the breed in a better state than when I got into Xoloitzcuintli, so I will continue to health test, DNA test, and breed for temperament, health, and conformation.”

Now, onward to Gold! I want to focus on what I have been doing and continue breeding healthy dogs with good temperaments. Please comment positively on your breed’s present condition and what trends might bear watching. My goal is to leave the breed in a better state than when I got into Xoloitzcuintli, so I will continue to health test, DNA test, and breed for temperament, health, and conformation. I want to continue learning about other kennels worldwide and bringing in new dogs to keep the genetic diversity, evolution, and line growth moving in a forward direction, as well as preserving the hallmarks of the breed. I think it is important to not become comfortable, but to continue to strive for better and better dogs in your breeding program, always trying to avoid becoming kennel blind. Under- standing what is taking place worldwide will only make this breed better and keep it healthy. Where do you see your breeding program in the next decade or two? I look forward to continuing my involvement with the Xoloitz- cuintli Club of America, especially at a time when the breed is growing in popularity. It is important to participate in breed-spe- cific education for those in the fancy as well as for pet owners. My paperwork, to be a parent club-approved judges’ mentor, has been submitted and is currently awaiting approval. Finally, tell us a little about Richard outside of dogs… your profes- sion, your hobbies. I work for the United States Patent and Trademark Office. I am an avid cook and enjoy trying new things. I am always on the lookout for the best places to go in my community for food, shop- ping, and more. Now that I have more room, I hope to convert a space into a studio and start making artwork again. (I graduated from the University of Miami over 20 years ago with a Master of Fine Arts.) It is just a matter of finding the time. In addition, I am hoping to do more international travel to meet more breeders worldwide and make connections. I feel very fortunate for the life that I have and the accomplishments that the dogs have garnered, but at the end of the day I am happy curling up on the couch with my beloved pets.

GCHS Alfta Del Rey and GCHB Sonadora Del Rey are the two top-winning Del Rey bitches. “Alfta” was owner-handled by Susan DiGiorno entirely throughout her career, winning the National Specialty in 2018 and Benelux Breed Winner during the World Dog Shows in Amsterdam. She was No. 1 NOHS Xolo as well in 2018. Alfta went Best of Breed in 2020 at the Royal Canin dog show in Orlando. GCHB Sonadora Del Rey is currently the No. 1 Xolo all-sys- tems, co-bred and co-owned with Robyn Lauck. Robyn handled “Dream” throughout most of 2021, keeping her in the Top 3 and the No. 1 NOHS Xolo. Co-breeder and co-owner Erika Lanasa took over at the end of the year and made her number No. 1 all- breed in record time, moving on to Best of Breed at Royal Canin and a prestigious Group 3. That night was one of the highlights of my life in dogs. Ch. Mucho Mucho Amor Del Rey, my Bred-By bitch, made breed history in January by going NOHS Best in Show under esteemed judge Dana Cline. “Mucho” is the first coated Xoloitz- cuintli to be awarded this honor. Mucho is also the tenth coated champion that I have owned and the sixth coated champion that I’ve bred. Her grandsire, Ch. Fullibus Mr Grey, was the first coated Xolo to get a Group placement. Barbara Griffin has trained her Xolo in various areas of perfor- mance to accomplish this admirable record of titles: Ch. Mescalero Del Rey CGC, CGCA, NAJ, NA, NJP, NF, OA, OAJ, OF, BN, RN, PCD, NTD, ITD, ATD, ETD, RATI, RATN, FDC, TG-N (I think I got them all! LOL) “Mescal” is the most titled Xoloitz- cuintli in AKC history. Mescal is from the first Del Rey litter of Xolos co-bred with Diane Baker, and he is the second coated male Standard to receive his AKC championship. There is a new, promising generation of Del Rey dogs and I look forward to seeing what the future brings for them. I am so proud of the dogs and their owners/co-owners for what they have achieved. I am also honored that I am the first Xolo Breeder of Merit to receive the advanced AKC recognition of Breeder of Merit Silver.

Crufts 2022 THE ‘WAKE -UP ’

ARTICLE, PHOTOS, AND RESULTS: KARL DONVIL

D uring the last European show in Hungary, we were discussing when the last Crufts happened. We were all very confused; some said it was in 2020, others were convinced that it was in 2019. Some counted how many were skipped while others counted in years. The last Crufts happened right after the outbreak of Corona and just before the national governments all over the world went into lockdown. We missed 2021, the year it would have been Cruft’s 130th Anniver- sary. Now, in March 2022, the UK government was one of the first to lift all Corona measurements. It promised to be a strange Crufts again—the “wake-up” of the dog show scene. It was for sure that there would be a serious impact because of Brexit. However, less than two weeks before the show, Russia invaded Ukraine, and suddenly shocked the world once more. The Western World sided with democratically chosen and ruled Ukraine and immediately imposed sanctions on Russia. The FCI and the British Kennel Club imposed a ban on the Russian Ken- nel Federation and all of its activities. Russian judges are no lon- ger allowed to judge abroad, Russian entries are refused, Russian journalists are refused, and more. This was not an easy decision, but like the Olympic Games or other events, it was not against the people of Russia but against the Russian regime. Unfortunately, it created a lot of hate among many Russians who did not understand all this, brainwashed as they were by their totalitarian regime. Bad luck again for Crufts. For the diehards, it was a welcome reunion; hugging friends was allowed again and happy faces were all over, and soon it looked like it was only yesterday since we saw each other. That’s the strength that radiates from Crufts—world-wide-wiedersehen! On the other hand, it was clear what impact Brexit had on the show; not more than five trade stands were non-British! Many corners were empty and because the stands were not rearranged, the spaces where there used to be big foreign stands were clearly visible now, empty! As after many years, most of the trade stands used to have their own specific locations, I could easily tell who was not present. Due to Brexit, the administration to bring in goods and take back the left- overs was too complex, and here you have the result. The very same was visible in the number of foreign exhibi- tors. The 2018 edition had 21,032 entries, the 2020 edition still had 19,909, but now there were only 16,924. The ban of Russian entries was hardly of any influence. In 2018 and 2019, the total

CRUFTS 2022: THE ‘WAKE UP’

was good for another 2,009 dogs. In the first Group, the Dalmatians were leading with 202 dogs, then the Bulldogs with 189, and the French Bulldogs with 178. The Poodles, all varieties together, had 311 dogs. The Chihuahuas, however, were with 283, Smooth and Long Coat togeth- er, the Pugs with 223, and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with 194. Sunday had only one Group, plus the big finals. It was Gundog Day! A total of 3,910 dogs had to be judged and this is not only the largest Group but it holds the two most popular breeds; the Golden Retrievers leading with 458 entries, fol- lowed closely by the Labrador Retrievers with 456 dogs in the rings. The Cocker Spaniel was also the fourth highest scoring breed with 321 entries, and the Flat Coat- ed Retriever, delivering the Best in Show, was represented by 224 of them. Notwithstanding the general drop in numbers for the show, these are still large numbers! I have no idea if the number of visitors dropped significantly, but over- all, this Crufts gave a much more relaxed impression. In general, it was easy walk- ing. It is hard to tell if this affected the traders for the better because you could take your time to have a closer look or ask for information. I did not discover any big novelties, at least nothing spectacular, and I missed shops with paintings, antique statues, and prints. Like everywhere, antiques are losing popularity. But maybe I overlooked it because, still, it is immense how many trade stands are here. Crufts is the place to be when it comes to present- ing new things in the canine world and it is the biggest market in the world, with a huge turnover. It is also clear that Crufts suffered from the COVID-pandemia, the Brexit, and now the war in Ukraine. Things have changed, and while at first it looked like nothing changed in those past two years, a lot did change! We lost people in our cynological world. We were hardly able to make new friends for two years, and still, there was a kind of familiarity all around. It was like a remake of a film where we could recognize scenes and decors from the old one but had to get used to new actors, new added scenes, and others left out. But we came to see it, to see how it changed, and to experience if it was still as good as we thought it was in the past. Will Crufts 2022 be the start of a new era, a wake-up?

colors, all for the good cause. They even charged an official to do the counting of the collections. The British Kennel Club itself proudly donated 50,000 pounds out of the Kennel Club Charity Trust and had placed collection boxes all over the place. Everyone seemed to be involved in one way or another, the solidarity was overwhelm- ing. Right before the finals on Sunday, an interview was displayed in the arena before 7,000 people and in Livestream with one of the volunteers who works in and for the dogs in shelters in Kyiv. It makes me happy that every year more focus is put on the relationship between man and dog. We cannot deny that dog shows have much to do with man’s vanity and only to a lesser extent with the breed in itself. More than a decade ago, a shock- ing reportage on the BBC opened our eyes, and since then, we again understand more and more that soundness and health come before beauty. No other show better understood this message and became a real gamechanger since. Let’s talk about high scores now. The top foreign countries are Italy with 265 entries, the Irish Republic with 244, fol- lowed by France with 202 entries, and Germany with 175. The winner of the Hound Group, a Greyhound called “Aya,” was from Germany. Hungary won the Pas- toral Group with a Border Collie named “Lenor,” and Spain won the Toy Group with “Conan,” a Yorkshire Terrier. On Thursday, we had the Working Group with 1,681 entries. Here, the Ber- nese Mountain Dogs had the highest entry with 140 specimens, followed by the Great Danes with 132. It was also the day for the Pastoral Group, good for 2,104 entries, and here the Border Collies had the top score with 253 entries, before the Bearded Collies with 205, and the Rough Collies with 158 entries. The Terrier and the Hound Groups were on turn on Friday with 1,926 and 2,438 entries respectively. The Stafford- shire Bull Terriers were dominant here with 306 entries, largely more than the 233 Border Terriers. It surprised me how popular this breed suddenly is. In the Hound Group, the Whippets were present with 382, then the Beagles with 188, and the Rhodesian Ridgebacks with 183. But if we take all the Dachshunds as one breed, then they beat everything with 510 entries. Utility was on Friday with 2,228 indi- vidual dogs to judge, and the Toy Group

number of Russian entries was below 300 dogs. Of course, there were still travel restrictions in many countries. And because there have been hardly any shows due to COVID it probably drastically affected the number of entries too. Most of all, in my opinion, a lot of people were still not sure that COVID could spoil things again. Britain was the first country to lift almost all COVID measurements, and probably a lot of foreigners were afarid that they had to reintroduce some again. In total, 1,843 dogs were entered from abroad compared to 3,171 for the last edi- tion, and also the number of countries decreased from 43 to 38. Too soon to tell what exactly had the most impact and if Crufts will fully recover again. I suppose we will have a much more reliable view on that next year; at least if there will not be another world problem that comes lurking around the corner. The Hungarian Pumis were able to win CCs this year, the Smooth Faced Pyrenéan Shepherd was accepted as a new breed, and since 1898, the Harriers are back again at Crufts. That’s what is new and brings us to 222 different breeds. Altogether, includ- ing the participants for the different sports activities, there were about 20,000 dogs gathered in the National Exhibition Cen- tre in Birmingham. The very same halls were occupied, good for 25 acres of Expo Halls, and about 5,000 collaborators and volunteers were there to help all this come to a good end—impressive numbers! One trend continues, Scrufts, which is winning every year in popularity. This competition is meant for mongrels and mixed breeds. The various competitions are very popular in the UK. Flyball, very popular but extremely loud, was not on display in the arena on Sunday, although this used to be one of the items to bring the public in the right mood. Agility, probably the most popular dog sport, had to take over. I was particularly moved to see how often one could find the Ukrainian flag in different ways. More than one participant was wear- ing something in the colors blue and yel- low; one was even completely dressed like that and another had a T-shirt with a yellow dove of peace over the Ukrainian map on a blue background. Solidarity with Ukraine was all over. Many stands made private collections; the BOB photo team made a collection, Birdbrook Rosettes made a big collection and an auction, and also sold ribbons and rosettes in the Ukrainian
