A LETTER FROM THE AKC PRESIDENT
T is the season of gratitude and we have plenty to be grateful for. Each one of you should be very proud of your contributions to our sports. Whether it was exhibiting your beautiful dogs in the show ring, judging, or volunteering at club events, we are grateful for that. Your commitment and dedication to dogs has helped our beloved sports, and our breeds, continue to grow and thrive. As we end this wonderful year, we look toward our 22nd AKC National Championship presented by Royal Canin, where we crown America’s newest champion and witness some of the excellence that is a result of responsible breeders with a passion for creating the best examples of their breeds. The AKC National Championship will be held at the Orlan- do Orange County Convention Center on December 17th and 18th. It is more than just a time to compete, it is an opportunity to gather and create new memories with friends. During our annual Championship weekend, the event floor will be abuzz with activity featuring several of our sports. The AKC/Royal Canin National All-Breed Puppy and Junior Stakes will celebrate the next generation of pup- pies and juniors soon to become champions. The AKC Agil- ity Invitational will highlight some of the finest dogs in the country that demonstrate incredible athleticism, and the AKC Obedience Classic will showcase dogs that are masters at executing commands. These events display the best and brightest of our canine athletes and we love to watch them display their talents. If you are unable to attend the AKC National Cham- pionship in person but would love to keep up with all of the action, you have the option to enjoy the events from the comfort of your home. The National Championship Group judging and Best in Show, Puppy and Junior Stakes Groups and Best in Stakes, NOHS Groups and Finals, Best Bred- by-Exhibitor and Groups, as well as Junior competitions in Conformation, Obedience, Rally, and Agility, will be avail- able on AKC.tv (available via your computer or smart phone, and on ROKU, Amazon Fire, and Apple TV) and live in our on-demand library for your viewing pleasure 24/7. Be sure to check AKC.tv for dates and times. Our dog sport community is a family, and we are deeply grateful that you are a part of it. Your hard work and devo- tion to our breeds and our sports are key parts of what makes the AKC great. We wish you a happy, healthy, and peaceful Holiday Season and a prosperous and joyous New Year.
— DENNIS SPRUNG, AKC PRESIDENT/CEO

SANDRA L. FREI BREEDER INTERVIEW BY ALLAN REZNIK STORMHILL AFGHANS
1. Where did you grow up? I am originally from Southern Califor- nia. I grew up in la Canada-Flintridge. 2. Do you come from a doggy family? If not, how did the interest in breeding and showing purebred dogs begin. Yes, my mother (Virginia R. Withing- ton) got her first Afghan Hound when I was around four years old. His name was Koh-I- Baba UD. He didn’t turn out to be a show dog, so she decided to turn to training him in Obedience. He became the first Afghan in the history of the breed to earn a Util- ity degree (UD), which at that time was the highest degree you could achieve in Obedi- ence. Her first Conformation dog, and the dog she began her Stormhill breeding pro- gram with, was Ch. Stormhill Silver Dream, a son of Ch. Taejon of Crown Crest. “Tae- jon” was a very influential stud dog in his time, and was bred and owned by Kay Finch of Crown Crest Kennels.
3. Who were your mentors in the sport? Please elaborate on their influence. My mother was my primary and most important mentor. She was friends with all the great breeders of the past who helped shape the breed into what it is today. These important breeders included Kay Finch of Crown Crest Afghans, Sunny Shay of Gran- deur, Bob and Babbie Tongren of ben ghaZi, Reigh and Dewey Abram of Dureigh, Lois Boardman of Akaba, Ned and Sue Kauff- man of Holly Hill, Pat Stephenson of Tajmir, Jim and Mary Nesbitt of Mecca, and Wally Pede of Scheherezade. Of course, over the years I learned a lot by training the dogs and going to handling classes, observing other great handlers in our breed as well as professional handlers, talking to people I knew in the breed, going to club meetings and seminars, etc. Back when I first started showing, which was in the early 1970s, Afghans were at the height of their popularity. There were a number of

INTERVIEW: SANDRA L. FREI, STORMHILL AFGHANS
successful breeders competing at that time. Entries at spe- cialties, all-breed shows, and even matches were huge. We learned a lot from each other. Back then, there was more discussion about dogs and pedigrees. Also back then, there was a lot more socializing among exhibitors, both at the shows and afterwards, than there is now. I participated in Junior Handling when I was a kid. Back then it was usually judged by a professional handler and held over the lunch hour. It only cost a dollar to enter and you could show any dog that you chose or your parents chose for you on the day. It was lots of fun. There was no pressure on the kids to win, so it was quite relaxed com- pared to today. 4. The Stormhill Afghans are widely known, highly suc- cessful and well respected. What breeding philosophies do you adhere to? Like my mother, I have always adhered to trying to breed to the standard. I have carried this philosophy over to my judging. Temperament is of utmost importance to me. We work hard on socializing our puppies from a young age. We put them on a very fine martingale leash at eight weeks of age and teach them how to walk on a leash by fol- lowing their mother on a short walk. It takes around two to three days to leash-train them using this method. 5. How many Afghans do you currently house? Tell us about your facilities and how the dogs are maintained. Currently, we have five Afghan Hounds, ranging in age from one year to nine years. We have “SJ” and his sister, “Milky Way,” who just turned a year; “Zolton,” who is five; and “Cooper” and his sister “Rylie” who are nine. At night, they sleep in the kennel, but in the morning they come in the house to chew on their bones. We try to take several of them on walks in the morning when the weather is nice. The main house has a detached garage with an apart- ment that Dave and I turned into a kennel when we first moved from California to Woodinville, Washington. There are six 15-foot indoor runs. Each dog has its own raised bed. Each run goes out into a 20-foot covered, out- door run. Each outdoor run has a gate that opens up for them to run over a grassy, fenced half-acre. There is also a fenced-in sports court off the kennel for them to run in. The garage has a built-in, raised tub for bathing. There is a raised grooming table along with several standing dog dryers. I have two large, stainless steel veterinary cages that my mom had that we use for storage and cage-drying. There is a sink for washing dog bowls, and a washer and dryer in the kennel area as well. 6. Who were/are some of your most significant dogs, both in the whelping box and in the show ring? For me/us: the dogs that we have carried on with are all an extension of my mother’s breeding. I attribute the success that Stormhill has had over all these years to the development of a strong bitch line that started with Ch. Stormhill San Dahl, a daughter of Ch. Stormhill Silver Dream. “Dahl” was bred to Ch. Shirkhan of Grandeur,

which produced the famous Multi BIS & SBIS Am./Mex. Ch. Pandora of Stormhill. All of our pedigrees go back to her. Cur- rently, the stud dog that has had the biggest influence on the dogs we have carried on with is Ch. Pahlavi Puttin’ on the Ritz, “Taco,” who was bred and owned by Karen Wagner. Over the years, we have had many successful dogs in the show ring. To name a few: • Multi BIS & SBIS Ch. Stormhill’s Who’s Zoomin’ Who, “Zoomie” • National Specialty-winning Ch. Calais Sunrise at Stormhill, “Cisco” • Multi BIS & SBIS Ch. Stormhill’s Silver Star, “Silver” • Multi BIS & SBIS Ch. Stormhill’s Sweet Dreams at Raffica, “Ella” A dog I bred and co-owned, Ch. Stormhill’s Red Zinger, is the top Agility Afghan in history. “Zinger” was owned by Robin Kletke, Robin Cohen, and myself. Zinger was trained by and earned all his MACHs and PACHs with Robin Kletke. He retired with 12 MACHs and four PACHs which, I believe, is a record that will never be broken. 7. You also participate in Agility with your Afghans, just as your mother Virginia Withington did many decades ago in Obedi- ence. Why do you feel it’s important to compete in other disciplines besides Conformation? I’m really a strong believer in participating in both Con- formation and Performance events. It’s good for their minds. Aside from Conformation, we have participated in Agility, “I’M REALLY A STRONG BELIEVER IN PARTICIPATING IN BOTH CONFORMATION AND PERFORMANCE EVENTS. IT’S GOOD FOR THEIR MINDS. ASIDE FROM CONFORMATION, WE HAVE PARTICIPATED IN AGILITY, OBEDIENCE, RALLY, LURE COURSING, FASTCAT, AND THERAPY DOG. TO ME, THE HARDEST PERFORMANCE EVENT HAS BEEN AGILITY.”

Obedience, Rally, Lure Coursing, FastCAT, and Therapy Dog. To me, the hardest Performance event has been Agility. They can be per- fect in class. Then you take them to a trial and sometimes they do great, but then other times, they trot around like they’re in the show ring, maybe even taking an obstacle or two. As frustrating as it is, we enjoy the people we have met through our involvement in Agility, and the fact that the dogs are judged on their ability.

Our Future: CH Stormhill’s Written In The Stars, “SJ”
“I WOULD SAY TEMPERAMENTS ARE MUCH IMPROVED. I THINK THERE ARE SOME NICE DOGS OUT THERE; HOWEVER, MORE ATTENTION NEEDS TO BE FOCUSED ON STRUCTURE. AFGHANS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE SQUARE, WHICH MEANS THEY SHOULD APPEAR BALANCED WHEN STANDING AND MOVING. ALSO, THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE ATTENTION PAID TO SOUNDNESS.”
Today, most of the Afghan litters being bred are on the East Coast. Thus, their entries are larger at most shows and they are able to finish their dogs more easily than we can here. Many of the shows we attend have, maybe, one to six Afghans entered at any given show, if that. It’s near- ly impossible to finish a dog locally on a timely basis because of our low entries and lack of majors. At our most recent Ever- green Afghan Hound Club Specialty, we saw our first major in two years, and it was only in dogs. Sadly, the numbers in our breed are dwindling nationwide because breeders have either stopped breeding due to their age or a change in living condi- tions, or have switched to another breed, usually one that requires less maintenance. To tell you the truth, I am not sure how we bring newcomers into our breed. However, in the past couple of years here locally, we have had several newcomers to the breed who are showing their dogs in Conformation. All three have joined our local specialty club. Along with myself and other members of our club, we have made a
8. Please comment positively on your breed’s present condition and what trends might bear watching. I would say temperaments are much improved. I think there are some nice dogs out there; however, more attention needs to be focused on structure. Afghans are supposed to be square, which means they should appear balanced when standing and moving. Also, there needs to be more attention paid to soundness. 9. The sport has changed greatly since you first began as a breeder-exhibitor. What are your thoughts on the state of the fancy and the declining number of breeders? How do we encourage newcomers to join us and remain in the sport? This is a hard question. I think the pandemic, and now inflation and the price of gas, have definitely caused people to rethink their priorities about their involve- ment in the sport, and which shows or events they choose to attend. We are defi- nitely seeing a decline in the number of litters produced and the number of dogs being shown, particularly in the West.
point of introducing ourselves and answer- ing any questions they may have. 10. Where do you see your breeding pro- gram in the next decade or two? I fall into that category of aging breed- ers. Not sure where I’ll be. When I think about breeding, I do the math. How old will I be when they reach 12 to 15 years of age? 11. Finally, tell us a little about Sandy outside of dogs... your profession, your hobbies. I am retired. Truthfully, my hobbies now pretty much center around the dogs. I feel blessed to have met so many won- derful people through my involvement in the sport. Judging our breed has taken me to many corners of the world and allowed me to meet many talented breeders from other countries, as well as judge their beautiful dogs. In closing, I would especially like to thank Terri Vanderzee and her mother, Mary Offerman, for all their help, sup- port, and guidance, which has contributed to Stormhill’s continued success.

BE ON TIME
F or those of us who have had the honor of being on the judg- ing panel for the Westminster Kennel Club during those years when Tom Bradley served as Chairman, you came away remembering Tom’s only rule, which was just three words: “BE ON TIME.” Those three magic words should be a creed to both exhibitors and judges. When you think of the magnitude of shows such as Westminster, which is televised and has a schedule to keep, being on time is paramount. As both a judge and an exhibitor, I am always amazed at the number of exhibitors who are not ready and make the judge wait while they are outside the ring talking to their friends. Some have multiple entries and no help to allow them to quickly switch dogs so that they don’t hold up the judging. Exhibitors are quick these days to be critical of judges for not spending enough time on their dogs during judging, while not admonishing their peers who routinely keep the judges waiting. Then there are also those exhibitors who don’t show up until the class has already started being judged, and then want to be admitted to the ring. I know that I do not allow latecomers into my ring once I have examined the last dog. There is a published schedule for a reason. The schedule allows the show to run in a timely fashion while also giving the exhibitors a really clear window when they may be called to the ring. The exhibitor is responsible for keeping track of the ring and taking into consideration that, in some cases, a few dogs (or maybe an entire breed) may be absent and they must be at ringside regardless. When judges get behind schedule, for any reason, it may affect the Group judging. When this happens, Groups start later or have gaps that keep the show running longer than needed—causing many of today’s shows to rarely finish Best in Show before 6:00 PM.

our Guest.” It is a catchy tune and I found myself thinking about Tom’s famous three words, “Be on Time.” I found myself insert- ing words into the tune to reflect our sport. Here is my version of the song which I’ve titled, “Be on Time,” sung to the tune of “Be Our Guest.”
Those of you who may follow my column know that I occa- sionally refer to music as a storyteller. I was recently on vacation at Disney World with my entire family. Disney has, over the years, created so many great original songs for its films and characters. While there, I again heard the song from Beauty and the Beast, “Be
BE ON TIME!
Used so much to fuel the fires We need more practice to improve our skills Most days, we just lay around while our dogs Become flabby, fat, and lazy. You walk into the ring and oops-a-daisy
Be on Time! Be on Time!
Keep those rings running right Get those leads around their necks And let the judges do the rest Set them up Take them around Your job has just begun Try to be a team, be exquisite Don’t believe me? It’s really easy They can gait and they can pose After all, it’s a dog show A win here is never second best Go on, get that armband ready Stand ring-ready at the gate.
Are you on time? Are you on time?
Snakes alive, we’ve been blessed! You were ready thank the lord All those coats are freshly brushed With her nails short, she looks great. And my dears that’s fine with me While the judges do their thing It’s up to you to keep them looking She stands still, super still For heaven’s sake, it’s spot-on! Do it well, the judge must be impressed
Be on time An on-time guest Be on time
Down and back And then around So fantastic For you our judge And
No hold-ups, don’t waste time. When you are late your peers will be enraged Be prepared and show with flair. Become a canine cabaret.
I’m on time I’m on time
You might be new and even scared. But you know you have prepared Don’t be gloomy or complaining Dog shows can be so entertaining
Your commands, I must respect! And thank God we are all here. And we’re obsessed with that major And are at ease While we aim to please Our confidence is growing Let us help you, we’ll keep showing Dog by Dog, One by One Until he shouts, “You are number one.” Winners or even Best of Breed Maybe even Group One. But for now, I must remember…
Tell yourself, “I can do it.” Your charge is in your grip And that judge has perfect taste, that you can bet Go on now and show yourself You have entered so take your chance If needed take a Xanax we suggest Being late is so unnerving for a judge who is standing He is not on time if he’s waiting Be on time Be on time Be on time Ah, those good old days when most were seasoned Suddenly, those good old days are gone. Cell phones and videos
Be on Time! Be on Time! Be on Time!
I know the lyrics are a little silly, but I hope you’ve enjoyed them and—from now on—you will always BE ON TIME!

Dear
Prospective Breeder (PLEASE ASK THESE QUESTIONS!)
E very so often I am asked by newer (and a few experienced) owner/exhibitors in my breed about breeding particular dogs together. Often, the individuals are looking only at the dogs in question or they will tell me they have put the prospec- tive sire and dam’s pedigrees together and it “looks good on paper,” and ask if I concur. What’s missing here? PROSPECTIVE SIRE AND DAM Let’s first look at the breed standard-driven type ele- ments, structure, and movement of the prospective sire and dam in question. Supposing ownership of the prospec- tive dam, has the prospective breeder honestly appraised her strengths and weakness? If not, have experienced and successful breeders (at the National Specialty level) been sought for input? Has the prospective sire been physically seen and appraised for his strengths and weaknesses? If not physically seen, have videos from all angles, including movement, been reviewed and discussed with the prospec- tive sire’s owner? Do the prospective sire and dam have similar strengths and dissimilar weaknesses? If there is a breeding history on either the prospective sire or dam, what do their respective offspring look like in relation to the breed standard?
