NATIONAL SPECIALTIES

ALASKAN MALAMUTE CLUB OF AMERICA, BLACK RUSSIAN TERRIER CLUB OF AMERICA, BULLDOG CLUB OF AMERICA, ENGLISH SETTER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA, FRENCH BULLDOG CLUB OF AMERICA, GORDON SETTER CLUB OF AMERICA, GREAT DANE CLUB OF AMERICA AND SPANISH WATER DOG CLUB OF AMERICA

1. When and where was your first National? Indoor or outdoors? Entry? Judges? Alaskan Malamute: According to an article written by Ben Obgurn and published in the AMCA 50th Anniversary Commemorative Chronicle ,the first National was held October 11, 1953, at Westchester Country Club in Rye, NL with a total of 29 entries. Best of Breed was Ch. Arctic Storm of Husky-Pak owned by Mr. and Mrs Robert Zoller and handled by Bob Aninger. Judge was Mrs Rudolph Engle. Black Russian Terrier: The BRT was admitted into the Work- ing Group from Miscellaneous in 2004. According to my records, the first official National was 2006 in Philadel- phia, Pennsylvania and there was an entry of 44 judged by Roger Gifford. Event was held indoors as a designated event with the Kennel Club of Philadelphia. English Setter: The first ESA Annual Specialty was held in 1932 on the James Harding Estate in Rumson, New Jersey. The judge was ES breeder Philip Schwartz, owner of PS Kennels. It was held outdoors. The entry was 39. Gordon Setter: The first National was in May, 1983 at the Clark County Fairgrounds, Springfield, Ohio. Judges were Mrs. Jeannette Allen (Scotland) for Breed and Mrs. Dawn Ferguson (Australia) for Sweepstakes. All judging was outdoors. The entry was 258 dogs with a total entry of 393. Sweepstakes had a total entry of 92 (37, 55). Great Dane: As I recall, my first National was in Overland Park, Kansas in 1977. The hotel was a The Best Western. I remember Rose Roberts was one of the judges but cannot remember anything else about it. We were indoors. Spanish Water Dog: The Morris and Essex Dog Show on October 1, 2015. Outdoors, Entry: 18. Judges: Charles E. Trotter: breed and Andrew Ritter: Sweepstakes 2. When and where is this year’s National? Indoor or outdoors? Judges? Alaskan Malamute: Orlando, Florida. October 28 through November 3, 2018. Indoors. Judges for Regional Rose- anne Deutsch from Pennsylvania, National is Gay Histake from New York. We hold a week long event with two shows. It travels to different regions in our club, this year is the Southern Area in Orlando. Black Russian Terrier: This year’s nationals will be held on November 2, 2018, in City of Industry, California as a designated event with the Tri-Valley Working Dog Club of Pinon Hills, an outdoor venue. Our judge is Nancy

Amburgey for all breed classes and Beth Downey for sweepstakes classes. Bulldog: This year’s national is indoors at the Doubletree in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The judges for the national are Bob Newcomb (intersex and juniors), Joyce Dingman (dogs), Pat Tinsley (bitches), Charles Kline (obedience and rally), Sweepstakes Lisa (dogs and best in sweeps) and Chip Gatt (bitches in sweeps). There are two other specialties following the national. The judges are: Michael Rathje (Intersex and juniors), John Lancaster (bitch classes) Penny Lancaster (dog classes), Winn Ryman (intersex and dog classes), Jeff Ryman (juniors and bitch classes), Cindy Stansell (PeeWees). Robin Stan- sell is the chair for the entire week. English Setter: Events for the 2018 English Setter Association of America’s National begin on October 20th and final- izes the activities on October 28th, 2018. Member club, Brandywine English Setter Club is hosting the 2018 ESAA National. The first two events are the ESAA National Agil- ity Trials on October 20-21, 2018, indoors at the B and D Creekside Activity Center in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. These trials will be open to all breeds with the English Setter entry embedded in the trial. Our own member, Barbara Mattes is the Trial Chairman for these ESAA Tri- als. The Agility Trial judge for the weekend will be Kim Reeher. The next two events are designed to evaluate and award dogs who work in the field and will be held at On Point Outfitters in Addison, Pennsylvania with our 2018 ESAA National Amateur Walking Field Trial for English Setters only on Sunday, October 21, 2018, and our Point- ing Breed Hunting Test, which is open to all breeds. Jane Danek is the Field Events Chairman with Frank Luksa as Secretary. The judges for the Field Trial are: Raymond Gubernat: Puppy, Gun Dog; Nicholas Mellon, Jr.: Puppy, Gun Dog; David Branik: Derby, Limited Gun Dog; Russ Bigus: Derby, Limited Gun Dog; and Shelley Garland and Stephen Garland: Field Trial Sweepstakes. The judges for the Hunt Test are: David Branik and Sandy Moody: Junior Hunter; Kim McVeigh and Edwin Shupp: Senior Hunter; Edwin Shupp and Nicholas Mellon, Jr.: Master Hunter. The majority of our members will start arriving on Tues- day, October 23rd and Wednesday, October 24th at the Seven Springs Mountain Resort in Seven Springs, Penn- sylvania. The excitingly anticipated National Specialty will launch on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, with our 2018 ESAA National with Obedience, Rally, a CGC Test and an
