A Breed Study: SCOTTISH TERRIERS

KATHI BROWN I am an educational consultant and professional developer in science education. I work with schools, state and national conferences, colleges and instructional material providers regarding the teaching of science as well as the science of teaching. As a child, we always had Irish Setters; however, I mark my true beginning in dogs with my own selection of Scottish Terriers in 1968. I began showing my second Scottish Terrier in the early 70s. As many others, I bought her as a pet. With encouragement and support of many, such as Jimmy Murphy, Jean and Fred Ferris, Bar- bara Kingsbury and kind handlers, I learned to groom a coat, handle and finished her and began my breeding and showing program. I have been judging since 2006. BILL DEVILLENUEVE I live in Dix Hills, New York, a suburb on Long Island. I am semi-retired, but am still involved with a textile machine and parts business in Taiwan. I have been the US rep for this company for the past 20 years. I have owned a Scottie since 1969 and have been seriously involved in exhibiting as a breeder-owner-handler since 1973. I was first approved to judge Scotties in 1983 and completed the Terrier Group in 1991. Since then, I have been approved for the Toy and Working Groups and several Hound and Non-Sporting breeds. GENE HAINS I live just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. I am a CPA in public practice—in other words, a tax guy. I went to my first dog show in 1986. I got a placement dog from what would be my bride and mentor (just ask her) and took that dog to shows with her in 1987. He never fin- ished; that was okay, and after all, I was supporting her. The next one provided specialty wins and my golf game was in the rearview mirror and we were on our way to the breeder-owner-handler BIS. I started judging in May 2005 and do so in a very limited way. DARLE HECK

I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I am an artist, an illustrator, photogra- pher and I run a boarding kennel. I travel and judge internationally and enjoy exploring new places. I also enjoy studying the stock market. I have been showing dogs all my life as my parents showed Scotties, I have been judging for 16 years and I am an all-breed judge.

CAROLYN HERBEL

I live in Oklahoma. As a retiree, I am indulging myself mostly in many dog related activities. My dog life start- ed when I bought our first AKC reg- istered dog in 1956 and entered her in obedience in 1959 (St. Joseph KC). My involvement in Lhasa Apsos start- ed in 1965 and resulted in over 125 homebred champions. I have been judg- ing since 1983.

I live in Holland, Pennsylvania. Outside of dog shows, I manage my family’s large boarding/grooming kennel. I also enjoy online gaming when I have some free time. I have been breeding and exhibiting Scottish Terriers for almost 45 years. I showed as a professional handler for a good part of that, then became a judge in 2005.

KARI HILL For over 20 years, I have lived in Greenville, South Car- olina. Other passions outside of dogs are cycling and run- ning. I love climbing the mountains on my bicycle and
